I tend to turn off my adblocker for forums / websites that I frequent and get a lot of good info from - they need the ad revenue and I need the forum, so its sort of quid pro quo.

That only works if you don't clear cookies and history after each browsing session, as I do (yes, I wear a tin foil hat too)markjazzbassist wrote: ↑Thu Oct 10, 2019 5:40 amif you click the "remember me" or whatever it is, you're always logged on. i turn off my computer many times and am always somehow still logged in here. just a thought.

Re: Listening to mixes in the car...
.flac or .wav files here - just say no to mp3  I record mostly classical music and I really don't like the sound of mp3 (although a lot of my younger clients ask for delivery in that format). I usually burn a test CD and run that around to the car, the living room stereo and the stereo on t...

Re: Minimal Band/Composer/Studio Website
My daughter is a singer and actor who maintains a website for professional reasons. Her domain name and web hosting cost about $30/year; she is in the musicians' union (AFM) and gets a pretty good deal from them. Her site is just a basic Wordpress template that somebody initially helped her tweak. S...

Re: Reusing Tape
The most common fault with older tapes is 'dropout'. This is caused when a bit of the oxide layer is damaged by humidity, abrasion, stretching, or other mechanical damage. It might only last for a second, but it ruins your take. When you are recording 8 tracks on 1/4", as with the Fostex, a very sma...

Re: Power Amplifiers in 2019?
I second the ART SLA 1 - great sound, great bang for buck, would have no issue with loads down to 4 ohms. I have three and have never had an issue with them,

Re: Tascam 38
Most problems on the Tascam 32/34/38 tape decks is where the various cards seat in the motherboard. If re-seating the cards doesn't do the trick, you might even have to resolder the connectors - apparently there were quality problems with the flow soldering of the PCBs on these models occasionally. ...

Re: Headphones and comfort
I find most open-back cans more comfortable for long listening sessions - an old pair of AKG K240 DF are my go-to endurance cans. I also have the ATH-M50, which I use on location recording sessions because of the isolation they provide...they are not as comfortable but the sessions tend to be shorte...

Re: Michael Joly is getting out of the microphone business...
This sucks. I had just visited his site a couple weeks ago with the idea of having him upgrade my mk012 pair. Is there anyone else that does a comparable job? Probably not as he mentions the difficulty of find a successor. Perhaps I'll diy it. Fortunately I have a third one i can experiment on firs...

The Blues Brothers and Rocky Horror got to make the list. And, although not strictly speaking movie soundtracks, old Broadway original cast recordings.

Re: How To: Replace an 8-Track R2R with a Laptop
A Zoom F8 would effectively replace the Tascam 38, has controls like a tape deck, and a tiny screen compared to a laptop. Also comparable in price to a decent laptop. Plus it has excellent mic preamps, should you ever want to ditch the mixer and travel really light to a remote gig.

Re: Monitors - Hanging Instead of Stands
I've been to a couple studios where they mounted monitors to arms extending from the wall - 2.5" metal pipe type deal with an elbow and pivots at the wall flange and monitor. No idea what you'd call this or if it's a "true studio product." I imagine places that deal in permanent PA installs in club...

Good to hear Jack is still playing with tape. Reminds me of the story of Springsteen creating Nebraska.

...This was the first show I’ve attended that required people lock their phones in a Yondr pouch...or in my case i just left my phone in my car. And damn if it wasn’t awesome. Everything should be like this...movies, concerts... It was brilliant to be able to watch a show without seeing everyone ta...

Re: vinyl collecting ( and surrounding planetary atmosphere )
7" reels were never as popular as LPs but there are lots of used, pre-recorded reels from the 70s...Craigslist, Kijiji, Ebay are all places I have purchased from. Generally, if you stay away from the late eighties and nineties when polyester tape with sticky shed syndrome emerged, used tapes are OK....
