Re: recording live to Otari 50/50 2 track

Couldn't you capture Guitar and vocal on channels 1 and 2 but not have to make it stereo? When transferring the tape and mixing down, couldn't you just balance them in mono? Or do the same thing with a close mic and room mic, both capturing guitar and vocal but allowing you to control the space? I s...

Re: Let's talk guitar amp recording

Haven't used it for any records yet, but I've been loving Native Instruments' Guitar Rig just to mess around with. Of course there's some "analog guilt" going on here, but it sounds so good and it's so flexible! Would it be so bad to record DI guitars, put them through Guitar Rig, then Re-amp for th...

Re: Mixing Doubled Vocals

I did a record recently where the singer doubled or tripled (or more) almost all the vocals on every song. On some songs I was able to convince them to start with a solo vocal in the verses and add the rest in the choruses to give it more power, but on some songs I had to be sneaky, so I came up wit...

Re: Cheap but good headphone amp recommendations

I know this is not a cheap solution at all (oops), but if you were planning on upgrading your interface at any point, the MOTU Monitor 8 is a great interface AND a 6-channel headphone amp. Other brands might also make something like this, but my experience with the MOTU has been awesome. My first he...

My handy dandy chord finder tells me that an A6/11. If it was a Dmin7 it would be

Re: Secret Chords

Some of my favorite chords are simply the result of laziness. Take this one, for example:

I think it's some kind of D minor 7-type thing? Easy to finger and sounds way more interesting than a normal D or D minor.

Re: How'd they get this sound?

The hard-panned guitars certainly help the vocal have its own space, and they don't have a ton of high- or low-end to compete with the cymbals or bass. The toms also seem to be panned pretty wide, helping them stick out from the bass. Seems like some no-frills, good-ol'-fashioned balancing from a co...

Re: Reamped Bass Phase Issue

Since the mic was placed so far away I'll assume they/you were going for an "open" sound. In that case, delaying the mic signal even further could solve your phase problem and create a cool bass sound? You'd probably want more DI than mic to keep it sounding solid, however. Another option would be t...

Re: Garage Studio Build

Looks awesome! Is that how the floor's going to stay? My live room has plywood over a floating floor and I ended up just collecting enough rugs to cover the whole thing, because flooring is expensive as shit! I considered getting nicer ply and staining/coating it, but that's expensive too and I had ...

Re: reverbs - mono or stereo and why?

I suppose if I had lots of different verbs on different instruments or was panning the verb away from the instrument, I'd want to keep things focused with mono. But for a general-purpose global reverb, always stereo. Honestly hadn't thought much about it until now, though!

Re: No fancy tube mics - am I missing out?

Just so everyone can read this one more time: Grab a mic. Track the vocal. Work on your coaching and help them phrase and fix busy lines and move them close or away from the mic and tilt the mic up or down for effect and baffle the room or not and look at the lyric sheet and ask "What are you saying...
