Re: Reducing noise from a vintage synth?

I had some noise issues with a Baldwin Fun Machine organ, and I just tried every combination of cable/DI/pad/phase/level until I found what worked best (I also had to disconnect the front panel lights which were adding some noise!). It still has a base level of noise that will not go away, but you c...

Re: sound effect libraries - good forums for second hand?

I don't know how or why someone would or could sell a "used" sound effects library, but there is a ton of great free stuff out there! I've found out about a lot of freebies (often limited-time deals) via the Tonebenders podcast: http://tonebenderspodcast.com/ This site is great too (for libraries an...

Re: Mixing template in Reaper

Step 1: pay for the license if you haven't already, those folks deserve it

Step 2: whatever works for you! I usually leave the group/bus faders at unity until I need to adjust or compress a whole group.

Re: acoustic meta-material

From what I gather it's the shape that's rejecting sound, not the material. And it seems like it has to be finely tuned for one frequency or range of frequencies. So heck yeah I'm sure it's great for exhaust systems, etc, but maybe not much else :(

Re: Surround Sound Thread

Lately though, I've been getting into the immersive stuff for binaural production - I think that has a lot more potential for music, especially since the majority of people seem to be listening on headphones nowadays. 360 video and AR/VR application are cool, but I think even as a standalone music-...

Re:

Nobody has mentioned the knee. Exactly what I was going to say. Limiters typically have a much steeper knee than regular compressors, in addition to higher ratios and faster attack times. Instead of the compression gradually becoming more pronounced as you approach the threshold (like, say, a vocal...

Re: recording live to Otari 50/50 2 track

Couldn't you capture Guitar and vocal on channels 1 and 2 but not have to make it stereo? When transferring the tape and mixing down, couldn't you just balance them in mono? Or do the same thing with a close mic and room mic, both capturing guitar and vocal but allowing you to control the space? I s...

Re: Let's talk guitar amp recording

Haven't used it for any records yet, but I've been loving Native Instruments' Guitar Rig just to mess around with. Of course there's some "analog guilt" going on here, but it sounds so good and it's so flexible! Would it be so bad to record DI guitars, put them through Guitar Rig, then Re-amp for th...

Re: Mixing Doubled Vocals

I did a record recently where the singer doubled or tripled (or more) almost all the vocals on every song. On some songs I was able to convince them to start with a solo vocal in the verses and add the rest in the choruses to give it more power, but on some songs I had to be sneaky, so I came up wit...

Re: Cheap but good headphone amp recommendations

I know this is not a cheap solution at all (oops), but if you were planning on upgrading your interface at any point, the MOTU Monitor 8 is a great interface AND a 6-channel headphone amp. Other brands might also make something like this, but my experience with the MOTU has been awesome. My first he...
