Re: Let's discuss spatial/immersive/ambisonic audio

I’m not sure that Youtube or Facebook have added headphone type decoding to go along with their 360 video support. I think there is a lot of great possibility with 360, but it’s sort of somewhere between stagnant and withering on the vibe. Which is disappointing! I agree, 360 videos seem like a nov...

Let's discuss spatial/immersive/ambisonic audio

Like many of us, I've been content with two channels for mixing music so far. However, with the popularity of VR and such, I've only just started seriously looking into spatial audio mixing/implementation as a marketable skill. Plus, I've got a project coming up (sound for a short animated film) so ...

Re: Let's talk substance

Um, but seriously though... I will get down with most substances (nothing too psychedelic), but It's gotta be the right one for the situation. Like choosing a microphone. Engineering for others: coffee, then a beer if someone brings them (they always do). Occasional pot or shot toward the end. Mixin...

Re: Let's talk substance

There's a parasitic fungus that infects male cicadas right as they emerge from their 17 years underground, eating away at their internal organs until their entire ass falls off. It causes them to become hypersexualized and prone to female mimicry. Researchers have recently discovered that it produc...

Re: When you love a LIMITER

I do love me some limiters, but I rarely ever want to hear them working the way I want to hear other compressors working. The ReaComp compressor in Reaper lets you set an "RMS time" (in addition to attack, release, etc.). The default is 5ms, but if you move it down to 0ms it's basically seeing every...

Somehow lost in a TapeOp-world glitch was my response to that second quote, which should have been:

"No. No it doesn't." !!!!

In TapeOp world we call that a "dropout"

Re: Tell me about your migration to Reaper

I learned Pro Tools, Logic, Cubase, etc. in school, then ended up with a non-official copy of Nuendo for a while. When I got a new computer and it was time to decide on a DAW, I went with Reaper because it was free (yes I should buy the license), way easier to use and more functional than Audacity, ...

First page of this 2015 thread has a few people talking about the VLA in that capacity..
Whoah, that's my thread! I did end up going with the Chameleon Labs and still use it all the time.

On topic, though, I have heard of people swapping out the tubes in ART gear for an easy upgrade.

Re: submixing drums for studio recordings

I haven't recorded to tape for a while, but have definitely simplified my drum miking. I've pretty much abandoned the top/bottom snare approach (always felt like it took a lot of work to sound "right") and started just miking snares on the side. SM57 or whatever's at hand, under the hi-hat pointed a...

Re: Reverb Help

If you've already used this technique then please disregard my post. But once I started using the "Abbey Road trick" I realized I don't need so many flavors of reverb at all. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=738&v=4lNckK8N3to I'm familiar with this trick and use it all the time on mostly...

That Rane paper has been ENDLESSLY useful to me. Just keep going back to it!

And try one of these for isolating and interconnecting your balanced/unbalanced stuff:

I use Waves IR More then any other reverb plug these days. I started rolling my own impulse responses a few years ago and it's made a world of difference.
How do you do make them?

Re: Mix feedback needed - Stoner Rock / Heavy Psychedelic Rock

Hi, I also did not find the track... so I listened to the other one you got: https://soundcloud.com/jeremy-hayes-302747180/mojo-bozos-electric-circus-paranoia-rough-mix-unmastered I find the drums are disconnected from the rest of the mix. Like you tried so hard to make the transients of the drums ...

Re: Mix feedback needed - Stoner Rock / Heavy Psychedelic Rock

On closed-back headphones: Good "wall of sound" vibe, I think guitars (and maybe everything) could use a bit of midsy bite though. Cymbals sound a bit thin. Low end is very well balanced though, which is a must for this genre. Solo sounds great, and the flangerish effect after the solo really kicks ...

Its 6:30 in the morning and I'm awake, because I have a remote session that starts recording at 8:30. It a once a year thing, thank Geebus.
I was up at 7:30 that same day for an 8:45 gig - recording kid bands at a Girls Rock camp!
