Its 6:30 in the morning and I'm awake, because I have a remote session that starts recording at 8:30. It a once a year thing, thank Geebus.
I was up at 7:30 that same day for an 8:45 gig - recording kid bands at a Girls Rock camp!

Re: McNally Smith College Auction

I'm good. Retired to Red Wing in late 2014. How about you? Hey Tom, another former student of yours (Dante Fumo, 2009-2011). Just wanted to say you were probably the most knowledgeable, engaging, dedicated, and nicest prof I had there. I still use everything I learned from you in my daily engineeri...

Re: Tell me about speaker stands

You guys have sold me on building my own. I always felt weird about shelling out cash for something that can be fairly basic. I'm thinking about investing in some pads though, they kind of rouse my 'snake oil' suspicion, but too many smart engineers I respect swear by them for me to write them off....

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Just picked up a used Blackout Effectors FIx'd Fuzz Deluxe. I kind of needed a 'swiss army fuzz' and that box can do pretty much the entire history of fuzz tones, and all of them well. Smooth and groovy to nasal and spitty. I like using fuzz to make a 3rd guitar part in overdubs sit in a totally di...

Re: Tell me about speaker stands

I built my own with plywood rectangles for the base and top plus three 2x4 legs at slight angles to reduce resonance.
The monitors sit on Auralex MoPads on top, and everything's super sturdy! I can supply pics if you like.

Re: A/D converter for Cole MGN sound

Hello, I'm looking for a converter right now, and while there are lot's of great ones, I'm struggling to find one that I connect with emotionally Have you tried just being yourself? I kid. But anyway, MacKinnon is right. Converters are all super good these days, and while there would be a sound dif...

Just thought of something but never tried it: shotgun mic under the drum throne pointed at the beater. Gonna try this on my next session.

Re: Aiight, let's talk broken shite, and other outstanding work

To do:
-Get new mini-knobs for the FMR RNP i bought cheap because the knobs were missing (but eh... pliers work fine)
-Put new lights in the VU meters on my Ramsa board
-Re-calibrate room/monitors
-finish building studio

Re: "On kicks with different mics like ya do"

I ABHOR the term "kick drum" and only use it in a context such as this. I either write out bass drum or abbreviate to BD. I prefer to reference a musical instrument with a musical term as opposed to referencing what something someone in a shiny uniform does to a ball in a stadium. That's funny, I a...

Re: Laurel or Yanni, is my hearing severely compromised?

I was wondering when this would pop up on the TOMB. I tried high and low-passing it -- didn't seem to correlate to when I'd hear which word. I'm super fascinated but I can't stand when things go annoyingly viral like this. Maybe I'll revisit it in a week 8)

The trick is to stop thinking of those mics as overheads and start thinking of them as overall mics. Put them where you get the best overall picture of the kit. If the OH position makes them feel like cymbal mics move them around until you get more kit than cymbal.
Yeah!

Re: Does anyone use overheads?

Thanks for sharing. Curious to try to hear things a bit more the way that you all are. To be more specific - is there anything in particular you're listening for? Assuming the obvious phase & reflection issues are under control and the player is good - any specific quality in the overheads that you...

i can usually get 75-85% of my drum sound from the overheads
Same here, except often it's a room mic, front-of-kit mic, or over-shoulder mic. Some time of whole-kit capture gives me most of the sound.

...hmm, but now I want to try using only close mics.
