This raises an interesting point about music that is underground. Maybe I'm being devil's advocate, or cynical- but it seems that somewhere deep down, the goal of most (not all!) underground/off-grid bands is to get on-grid. Isn't your average Bushwick loft-party band really just trying to get known...

I love the idea of this. But it would be very tricky for an emerging artist who is trying to gain traction in the music world. It would put you at such a huge competitive disadvantage with everyone else. I know that sounds very bottom-line oriented, but unfortunately that's the way of the market. It...

I would avoid any mics under the instrument. Any sound you want to capture will come off the top of the instrument. (remember- the resonators are capped on the bottom) And as mentioned there are a lot of noisy moving parts down low. It's really hard to get a vibraphone pedal/damper system to be nois...

Gear manuals... any favs?

Kind of a boring question, but- Any recommendations for gear manuals that contain all sorts of insight? Just reading through a manual for a console I'm going to be using, and realizing how insightful these things can be. Not gear specific info, but general insight. Who knew? (probably all of you sma...

Good point. Everything from amazing old wax cylinders to vilified digital formats all have that fundamental trait in common.

Taking it back a few decades: Remember those silly headphones we had in grade school with the AIR FILLED cords? They had a speaker in the central box, and distributed the Audio to the individual headphones via analog sound pressure waves through the air hose ("cord"). The headphones didn't even hav...

And in order to not railroad this conversation- Kick is such an amazing album. It totally rocked my early high school days. Listened to it all loud on my Dad's hi-fi before he would get home from work. One of those albums that subconsciously opened my ears to high quality recorded sounds, even thoug...

Re: The Dawn of Digital

Yes those early A/D - D/A converters may not have been stunning, however believe me this was miniscule, compare to the 'damage' that 10,000+ plays of your analog multi-track would do. Boom! Random idea: Someone needs to hack Pro Tools and write a program that would degrade the digital file of an au...

I'm all for it. But in my experience those in marketing and promotion sometimes are not. Can make their job harder... which is often to be able to easily categorize and label a product.

Hi Mark-
I think what everyone is getting at here is that it's not as black and white as you may be thinking. There is no ONE way to do these things. And there probably never was THE way that has since changed.

Unfortunately, I don't think FOH is ever really pleased with onstage effects for vocals, regardless of device. :?
