I saw the Clasp system in action at a St. Louis AES in 2009. The company owner Chris was there, as well as Chris Mara demonstrating it using the college's studio, which had a 3M M79 2". Seemed to work great, and altho expensive, a real alternative to the usual tracking/dumping into DAW scenario. Rig...

Zack is an extremely honest and straightforward guy. I bought an Otari 1/2" 8 track from him a handful of years ago, and it's still going strong. Not only that, but I made a great friend. Here's to a cool tape machine, and a good guy. Good luck!

In my opinion, the Otari 1/2" 8 track is the best sounding narrow format tape machine made. Almost to the point that it doesn't sound "narrow". My main machine now is a 2" MCI JH-16-16 trk, but If I had to track a record on the Otari, I'd not be bummed at all. Go for it!

I have a mini ramp just outside my studio that I can skate any time the urge hits. It's a perfect fit for my obsession with backside 5-0 grinds and optimal biasing points...plus it's a great conversation piece for bands when they take smoke breaks.

Some great points all around in this thread. I don't have much to add aside from agreeing with Joel about gp9 not having much of a tone. On my Otari, it sounds almost transparent, but on my Jh-16 it has a good combo of clarity and the ability to take a lot of level. Also, my machine and console are ...

What I liked about running at +9 as opposed to say + 6 was the feeling of getting 'juiced' tones on playback. It's really all in how you look at it. I am very careful about levels, so if you get some stray hot level running at + 9, you may be screwed pretty quick as opposed to giving yourself some h...

I'm another late model JH-16 owner (2" 16 track), and I was worried to death about running my machine at elevated levels due to killing the electronics and worse yet lack of erasure at higher levels. But just a month or so ago I attained some 3M 996 tape and decided to give it a go. Its a whole diff...

I picked up 2 reels from eh91311 this week, and they were shipped extremely fast, and packed securely. I couldn't ask for a better deal. Just wanted to share my experience, since buying used tape sometimes is iffy- this deal isn't.

Hey Dennis! Thank you for the kind words. Hope all is well in your corner of the world(which is not far from my corner of the world...). We do definitely need to hang again soon. Shoot me a message sometime and we'll make it happen!

Wow. I just got word of this thread, and all I can say is thanks, Raymond. My path of the last 4-5 years has been a crazy one. One day I decide to stop shooting myself in the foot and build this thing I think I've always wanted, and then next thing I know I'm recording albums (some that are even rel...

Bought myself a new Macbook Pro with Logic 9 and an Akai MPK49 controller keyboard. Wanted to get a nice portable setup, and I think this will do the deed. Hope everyone is well for the season!

No argument here. By 'conversion-less' I meant non-digital conversion, straight from an analog medium to the ears. Nothing more, nothing less. I'm aware of the signal path and anomalies of said path. Lord knows that- I own a JH-16. It takes dedication, as with anything worthwhile.

Not at all trying to fuel the flame, but I will say that listening back to vocals from 2" 16 track thru a nice console is pretty fun. Conversion-less playback is sometimes a different thing entirely.
I track distorted guitars thru my Syteks all the time.
