dbx 163a - is this normal ???

Just got this unit and I can return it if its not working properly. When I slide the fader to the right (more compression) , it seems like the output goes louder. This is opposite to what you think would happen. Do these things have some sort of automatic gain makeup ? There is an output gain knob s...

Parallel EQ ???

OK - I've read the recent threads on parallel compression and it sounds like a pretty common technique. How common is parallel EQing ? Would there be a point to it ? I'm just thinking I could leave my basic tracks unprocessed but EQ a submix (maybe to extend the highs) to add back in to the main mix...

Well , I wanted to use it for live shows as well as recording. Don't know if rubber bands would be sturdy enough for live.

Its an Ampeg Gemini 1 from the 60's. And I found the offending tube and tapped it a bit. Got that glassy ping coming out of the speaker. Definitely a microphonic tube. I think I might try one of those tube damper thingys to start off with since they are pretty cheap. I like the sound of this amp wit...

Wow- Interesting. Is this just something that happens with old tubes then ?
This amp is from the 60's and still has the original tubes in it so, probably would help it out to replace the tubes.

Thanks for the replies.

Fixing a rattling tube

Anyone know of a way to remedy this problem ? When I play certain notes on my electric it rattles the tubes and I get that glassy rattling sound coming out of the amp. Really annoying when trying to record. Seems like its a common thing cause most of my old tube amps have this problem. There must be...

Thanks for the replies. Definitely helps. I am clueless though. I had no idea that the 238 is a -10 piece of equipment. Sounds like I need to buy a +4 to -10 interface anyways to go from my mic pres and compressors to my 238. I realize now that I've been improperly connecting my gear though I haven'...

001 inputs ? (tape>tools)

I'm transferring a batch of songs from my tascam 238 into PT for editing and effects and etcetera. Question is: How should I have the inputs set up for the best sound quality ? I think its under setup/hardware where you can adjust the sensitivity for inputs 3-8. Not sure if I should leave it on the ...

Hell yes. I finally got around to trying this. I wish I'd known about this sooner. It completely changed the mix I was working on. Turned it from sterile sounding to really nice and full. Using this technique with a ReAmp was also fun. Opened up a whole new world of tone possibilities for my mix. I ...

Compressor Question

So I've heard of the technique of busing a signal to a compressor and then adding it into the mix in addition to the unprocessed signal. Question is would this work on a whole mix ? I have a mono compressor I'd like to use for a stereo mix. I'm thinking I could bus a mono version of the mix to the c...

I've been stoked on my little yamaha keyboard lately. I think its a ps140 or something. Its a little older. Maybe early 90's or something. Got it at a thrift store for 6 bucks. The sounds are totally cheesy and lo-fi. But they are so lo-fi that they actually sound really cool. For instance- on the s...

Yamaha CP-70 :Recommend me an amp

So I've been just running my CP-70 electric piano through my bass rig which is a Plush tube head and an old Jensen 12 inch speaker. Tone is pretty good but has kind of that "honky" electric guitarish sound. I need something that makes this thing sound a little more natural. What are y'all running yo...

YES ! Lanois live is pure genius. I've seen him twice now both times in Park City. He has this intense energy onstage. Seems kind of nervous and pissed off at the same time but he seems to channel that into some freaking soulful guitar playing. I'm surprised he doesn't have more of a reputation as a...
