The old stand-by: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/KM235/1

Worth trying an ORTF configuration with your overheads, btw. More natural than X/Y, in my opinion.

The preamps are good. They are based around the Analog Devices SSM2017 chip, which was a good chip in it's day. You can upgrade the chips; there are a few pin for pin compatible chips out there including the Analog Devices SSM2019, the Burr Brown (Texas Instruments) INA217 and the THAT 1512. In fact...

Thank you all for the kind words. I'm pretty stoked with how nice the tracks are sounding. This has been a long road for me, getting to this point. Like losthighway says, it's nice to finally be able to achieve what I want sonically with the tools I have and not feel the urge to buy something else. ...

The end of preamp lust?

I recently upgraded my AD/DA conversion from three Presonus Firepods to a Yamaha N12 digital mixer and a Steinberg MR816x (also made by Yamaha and compatible with the N12) on loan from a friend. The cool thing about the MR816x is the ability to do Direct Monitoring in Cubase, which means I can set u...

Well, I gotta say... the preamps in the MR816x sound damn good. I'm listening to what we just tracked and have not even touched the EQ yet, just balancing levels and everything is gelling together beautifully. The drums sound just like they should; nice high-end sizzle, defined kick, powerful snare,...

Yes, you can see them on the other side of the mixer (opposite of the Moog) on the bottom. I am not using them at the moment. I'm doing an experiment to see how good the preamps are in the Yamaha N12 / Steinberg MR816x. Some people have claimed that they are so good that they have cured their lust f...

54db of gain, yes, but the Multimix he's using currently has 50db of gain. The Eureka is cleaner at high gain settings, but point taken. Plus it has the variable impedence, which really helps ribbon mics. I would stay away from cheap tube designs if noise is an issue. A ribbon probably needs a pream...

I'd look for a used Presonus Eureka. I know someone selling one for $250. Much better preamp than any you listed, no tubes, lots of clean gain, a compressor, and decent EQ.

That's a drag because the M50s are such great headphones; I can just picture someone getting a pair, not knowing better, and thinking "Man, these suck!"

Yeah, those are basically the Hammond Suzuki CU-1. I have one attached to my XK System, but it switches the XK3. The nice thing about the custom cable is it also switches the Ventilator. So I have have a real Leslie and the Ventilator running at the same time and switching from one source.

I found the schematic for the XK1 which has the 8pin DIN pin out info. Leslie 8pin DIN 1 - audio out 2 - Leslie detection (12vdc) 3 - not used 4 - audio out 5 - ground 6 - not used 7 - Leslie fast 8 - Leslie slow So to wire up an adapter cable, you'd do the following: One end would be the 8pin MALE ...

About the FP10, there is no difference between it and the older models that are actually labeled "Firepod". Presonus had to change the name due to a lawsuit from Apple. I recently sold my three Firepods due to upgrading (which I mentioned) and the fellow that bought them not only loves them but told...
