No Madison visit is complete without a meal at Ella's Deli on East Washington Ave. Y'know how TGI Friday's has crazy crap all over the walls? It's like that but on acid. The inside is covered with all kinds of weird animated displays. Airplanes and billiard balls fly overhead as Bart Simpson watches...

I wouldn't blame Phil Spector. Listen to John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band. Spector could do a great raw stripped down record, it just wasn't what George brought him in to do.

You do know that despite Taxman being written by George, Paul did a great deal of the guitars, right? The solo in that song is played by Paul on the same guitar that he uses a lot on the new album.

I think a lot of the equipment was really hifi, but in order to fit a lot of sound into four tracks, they bounced the hell out it and the result was the gritty sound you speak of. For Pet Sounds Brian Wilson would record instrumentals on three tracks and then bounce that down to one and then record ...

I think I've heard someone compare the new Smile to a cast recording of the Tommy musical. It makes sense because both are recordings based on live performances based on albums. When Smile was to be performed in 2004, Brian Wilson and Darian Sahanaja weren't even thinking of finishing the Beach Boys...

I go to Madison Media Institute in Madison, WI. So far it has been a great experience. A lot of the lecture classes are below my skill level right now since it's just first semester, but starting from the ground up is probably a good thing for those people who haven't been recording for a long time ...

Re: brian wilson singing

I think Brian's biggest problem these days isn't in his overall vocal ability, but rather his consistency. He can be really great, or...well...you know. When he was promoting SMiLE on the Ellen show and Leno, I was getting worried. His voice was lacking and his overall stage demeanor was simply awkw...

Re: brian wilson singing

Short answer: SMiLE is all rerecorded based on original concepts. Long answer: The new SMiLE wasn't originally intended to be recorded. Brian Wilson, and collaborators Darian Sahanaja and Van Dyke Parks made a complete SMiLE with the intention of it being performed in London in early 2004. First, Br...

Re: Japanese Toilet Day

I hear they are closing the last toilet paper factory, anyway. Prices are up to $20k a roll now. Damn. Looks like I'll need to buy a bidet. I don't want to be bothered with the complexities of a digital toilet. I just want to lay down my material, get some great sounds, and move on. There's somethi...

Re: Japanese Toilet Day

I don't think I'd like a digital toilet. Too harsh. I definitely prefer the warm punch of a good ol' analog toilet.
