Re: Why isn't phase cancellation a problem in M/S?

Thanks Professor for setting the record straight (and refreshing my memory about the trig definitions of the mic patters. 1-cos A indeed!). The first place I ran across the M/S stuff is also Striecher and Everest's " The New Stereo Soundbook ." I think this is the one Professor is trying to site. Th...

Re: orchestra recording

I wasn't thinking about rock micing at all, more along the line of purist decca tree or 3 omnis, perhaps with a solo mic or two. Either of these could be run on shorter mic cables to a snake at a central location. I didn't read your posts as closely as I should.

My bad.

Re: Why isn't phase cancellation a problem in M/S?

Professor, I'm pretty sure an omni will yield the same as back to back cardioids. My thinking is since the ideal omni pattern=1 and the ideal fig-8 pattern = cos A, then with and omni mid, you are going to be having a situation where the patterns = 1-cos A, which is the definition of the ideal cardi...

Re: Why isn't phase cancellation a problem in M/S?

Well I guess my questions deals more with levels. Say your polarity-flipped channel is the one on the far right. Wouldn't that side be quieter than the left because everywhere that the left mic is summing with the center mic the right mic would be negating? Ahhh yes. I know that you know alot of wh...

Re: Ideas for Bass Management in Corners

Here's another great link comparing different corner treatments: http://forum.studiotips.com/viewtopic.php?t=536 It sounds like the plan you have will only make more corners within which bass frequencies accumulate. I finished the Super-Chunk corner treatment in my place and it is probably the easie...

Re: Why isn't phase cancellation a problem in M/S?

Actually, M/S recording can be done with anything for a mid mic. With an omni there the system acts sort of as if there were two cardioids. A cardioid there is equivalent to two hypercardioids, a wide cardioid=two cardioids (not in the same way an omni yields two cardioids), another figure-8 gives y...

Re: orchestra recording

Just as an example, on one gig last year, I was working in a small theatre, around 600 to 800 seats. I was only recording 6ch, but I still needed almost 800ft of mic cables. As a general rule, unless I'm working in a small jazz club, I typically bring 4ea 100ft cables, 4ea 50ft cables and at least ...

Re: How did you fund your studios?

Work, work, work. Bits and pieces accumulated over years (around 16 of them). Still working a day job, but I am finally at a point when I can hang up my shingle, quit this job and get a part-time one until I start to starve (again). That CD printer point is a great one. Another idea is to get in cah...

Re: I'm a'ripping into my console!

Big Bath is a contact cleaner without any lube in it. It looks pretty environmentally/personal-health friendly. Google "Big Bath" "Contact Cleaner" and a few sites will pop up. It is made by GC something or other.

I'm a'ripping into my console!

I?ve been limping along on 16 channel Soundcraft 200b board for some years now (adequate for my 8 track reel-to-reel days, but now I?m going 24 stand alone hard disk). I recently got a larger frame, some extra channel strips, and a power supply for a 32 channel version. I?ve got a few questions. Mos...

Re: so, I just scooped up a sytek . . .

I know people have different ways of solving audio problems, but I cannot understand why in the world someone would pay $100 for something that could be DIY-ed by someone who has zero practical experience with electronics and costs around $10 with a case and everything. In fact, I'm going to bet tha...

Re: so, I just scooped up a sytek . . .

Actually, I'd go even lower than 1k for the testing period. I'm not sure how much you want to attenuate the signal. If you aren't getting enough grit, run the output of one pre into the input of another, then use the pad. Oh, just in case you don't know about this stuff, the lower the value of the r...

Re: so, I just scooped up a sytek . . .

This is an easy one. Short the hot and the cold with a resistor. You cannot overdrive a resistor...well, I guess you could catch one on fire, but not with the the output of a sytek. Don't hesitate, go now to radio shack and get a few with different values (I'd try in the 1k to 20k Ohm range). You co...
