I have a 16 channel Toft and if you saved up a bit more you could afford one as well. I don't know what Mr. Sullivan's experience is with the Tofts to make him not recommend them. True, you are not getting a made in the USA product with the attention to detail and robustness one would ideally like. ...

I'm often recording drums in the corner of my room. Yes, they do fit there most conveniently, but also I found that they sounded good there. I did the whole, walk around the room with a floor tom thing to see where it sounded best... it was the corner. I think what's behind it is definitely due to t...

hey phd, I've got similar dreams, man. I found this website www.loopnet.com that you can search commercial realty on. You do have to register to see the full listings, but you don't have to pay anything or give a credit card or something. Unless, of course, you want access to some "premier" listings...

increasing the height of a structure

So I'm trying to find a suitable property to buy and build out a studio in. Just saw a place that has a 900sf commercially zoned detached building. It seems to have pretty good bones to it except for the fact that the ceilings are only about 8' or so. I'd much prefer 12' or maybe more. Could anyone ...

all excellent advice from RM.

I worked on one of these for a bit. Great machine. Never used the noise reduction.
I created a recall/track sheet for it that you may find useful.
Print it on 11x17.

So are you basically overdriving the pre with the normal gain knob and then backing off the output via the feedback to keep it from clipping your converters?

I have the Germ pre. I think it's a good pre, but I was underwhelmed with the feedback feature. The problem is that as you turn up the feedback knob, the gain goes up too. So it's impossible to tell if you like the sound better because of its quality or because it's louder. When I concentrate enough...

Made mix adjustments for the song, Positivity, by Red Pony Clock. They posted the unmastered mix on their myspace: www.myspace.com/redponyclock . I think the coolest thing about the mix is the guitar at the beginning. I ran it through a Fisher Space Expander spring verb and a Yamaha analog delay. Th...

Regarding ear plugs making live mixes sound bad- yes, this is most often the case. Ear plugs (especially cheap ones) do not attenuate all frequencies evenly. So they end up totally altering the sound of anything that comes at you. You can spend more for earplugs that are flatter, but the pair I got ...

hmmm... I've had similar static issues with my Otari machine. They always seemed to be somewhere in the path of the signal going to tape, but not in the input monitoring section. So I would never hear the intermittent static until playback. But if I put my alignment real on, there was never any stat...

If you're a little bit sneaky you might be able to buy an eval board from TI, Analog Devices, AKM, Cirrus Logic, or another company of the like. Usually you need a bench supply to power them up so that might be an extra purchase. But what you'll be getting is a state of the art converter with the la...

not a laser mic, but sort of on the subject of new kinds of mics, are you guys familiar with MEMS mics? They're only finding use in cell phones and similar things like that, but they're not too shaby and impressively manufactured directly in silicon. Hence they're super small and ideal for making mi...
