Re: question

I just got through listening to the first two Velvet Underground albums in their entirety for the first time. Thank god they weren't concerned about fidelity - their stuff would've NEVER been released. If the music is great, screw the recording quality. There's enough great sounding shitty CDs out t...

Re: Going To The Symphony

I have a confession to make - I haven't bought a rock CD in a REALLY long time. All my money goes to classical music now - 95% of it is surround-sound SACDs. The only pop/rock I really listen to is whatever I'm working on. That gets me going. We saw the Boston Symphony Orchestra play Holst's "The Pl...

Re: MP3 Making

Make sure you've normalized your track.

If you've got a Mac, iTunes does a great job. Here's a link to one of my pages:

Re: new to tape....

iford: If you do buy an 8-track portastudio, you won't need a mixer. It comes with one already. Cassettes have this frequency response "hump" around the hi end of the bass scale (I forget - maybe 300Hz?) that is noticeable. I used a TASCAM 8-track for years, and although I loved it, I was SO glad wh...

Re: buttholes of the day; MONSTER CABLE

"thee is a vast diffrence between the 40AWG 50' radio shack spool and something like an Audioquest or a Kimber" I'd never use Radio Shack speaker cable - that stuff's too thin (40AWG sounds a bit ridiculous - are you sure that's how thin their stuff is? I thought it was 24 gauge). But 14 gauge CU sp...

Re: new to tape....

I'd save up my cash while sticking to what I already own if I were you. You need to develop a base of knowledge before you can make decisions like this (for instance - you want a wicked old TASCAM mixer but don't want a mackie or a behringer? I betcha the mackie or the behringer would sound a lot be...

Re: buttholes of the day; MONSTER CABLE

Anyone who's willing to spend an outrageous amount of money on snake oil for no apparent reason and without looking into it deserves what they get. But I'll tell you, there is NO difference in audio quality between esoteric speaker cable that costs umpteen million dollars a foot and the stuff you ge...

Re: Click tracks again...

Clicks are a great way of training musicians to pay attention. Once they understand tempo and can feel it, they can slosh all over the place on their own and still sound tight. Beethoven probably practiced to a click (a metronome); he turned out okay. The WORST musicians I've dealt with have always ...

Re: Bush knew Of tsanumi, didn't warn???

Scientists can't predict earthquakes yet. They can warn that one may be imminent, but they can't even agree on how well-defined "imminent" is. So what should you do? Evacuate the entire shoreline of the Indian Ocean for a year or two just to be safe? Bush is too stupid to pull off something like that.

Re: how much RAM?

1. Only buy the computer from Apple (and the cool monitor, if you've got mucho bucks). RAM and hard drives should come from somewhere else. 2. RAM is your blackboard, the hard drive is your file cabinet. The more RAM you have, the more stuff you can pull out of your hard drive before having to put a...

Re: how much RAM?

The rule of thumb I've come up with after owning five computers is that you should max it out while you can. The RAM for your machine will get much more expensive in the future as manufacturers gear up for the latest, most common chips. If your RAM is currently common, buy as much of it as you can c...
