Re: The Necessity of Compressors?

It sounds like most people here are using compression mainly to keep the volume of a track steady, but doesn't it do other things as well? Doesn't it thicken the sound of an instrument by bringing up the quieter frequencies of each note (the harmonics)? Or am I off base here? A lot of the compresso...

Re: how do YOU do MONO drums? ? ?

I love to record drums mono, especially if I'm gonna pan them to one side of the mix, which I tend to do a lot... (Why is it if the Beatles are so damn influential, that you rarely hear drums panned to one side these days??) Anyway, I too usually use a Coles 4038 OH, a Beyer M201 on the snare, and a...

"I really want to get an Altec M-21 (coke bottle)"

I love those mics...
I've got a pair, and I use them all the time for OHs and room mics...

Nice on an acoustic guitar as well...

Re: Another Wilco/Ghost is Born thread....

I just took a long drive in a nice rental car with a good sound system from Sioux Falls to Billings through some of the starkest and yet striking landscape in the country ("have you dug Wall Drug?") with some equally striking weather--those big beautiful fluffy cumilus clouds with occasional rain sh...

Re: TOM WAITS......seeeeecrettttssssss

His live shows right around Mule Variations were just the coolest shows I've ever seen, too.... A vastly different setlist from night to night (gotta love that), and Tom had a small little riser on stage with ramps that he used to great effect. Everything was covered in chalk dust, so a Tom stomp wo...

Re: TOM WAITS......seeeeecrettttssssss

Does anyone know of ANY recources for information on how they recorded any of his albums? It's like some giant seeeecrettttttt.... There was a pretty good article in Mix magazine 5-6 years ago that went into the recording process on a lot of his recordings, including Bone Machine... In fact, that's...

Re: TOM WAITS......seeeeecrettttssssss

So, Tom Wait' records ...... (particularly the last two, alice/blood money) does anyone have any revelations as to how they achieve that sound? Sounds like a bunch of great musicians playing in the same nice-sounding room with a healthy let-it-bleed attitude to me... "Bone Machine" certainly reeks ...

Re: Ye olde AKG D19

I don't think they used the D19 as an OH.

The pics I've seen have the mic 1.5' or so above the snare, and the 4038 as their trusty OH...

Re: binaural head mic

"i want a binaural ribbon mic. quick, mic companies, build that!" Coles did build a few ribbon-based Binaural mics, but even Cole's present staff is unaware of that fact. I've seen pictures of the mic, and it looked like Ward Cleaver. A very realistic-looking head on a stick hovering over an orches...

"I'm from Texas...I know pedal steel. This guy is defenitely not a traditional, in the sense of The Texas Playboys, but nonetheless, great."

Pedal steel?
Texas Playboys?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Leon McAuliffe was straight steel guitar without pedals...

Re: TapeOp Article about Guitars

Was that the article that was basically about cheapo guitars that might sound as good as "good" guitars on tape?... My kind of article... The new Eastman archtops are certainly in this catagory. They can be had for 1-1.5K new (I'm already seen some used go for 750.00 or so), and can play and sound o...

Re: anyone have an ev re55 or 655 or 654?

I really like the RE55 on Dobro or Django-style guitar, when I want to accentuate (or at least capture) that mid-range honk of the instrument...

Agreed, omni dynamics are pretty neglected these days, and underrated for sure....

Useful mics...
