Re: Setup advice for Tascam M35 and 38 tape machine?

For tracking, connect the 38's inputs to the M35's bus outs or direct outs for each channel. 38's output should go into tape returns 1-8 on the M35.
For mix down you'll likely want the 38 outputs connected to the line in of channels 1-8 on the M35 so you've got access to EQ and sends.

Re: Question: side chain compression' what, why and how

"Side chain" compression is when you have a compressor afect a track, while being triggered by another track. As others have mentioned examples... I will only give you the one I use. On drumkits. I use a SEND to another auxiliary track, that has this compressor on it. I might send the entire drumkl...

Astral Weeks on repeat. Mainly Madame George.
It might be my only teenage obsession that holds up and still delivers new and unexpected things with each listen. The third, self titled Velvet Underground record is a close tie.

Re: Carpal Tunnel Surgery

(and I never mentioned it on here but I had throat cancer last summer. Beat that f****er) Fuck. Good on you. I just lost my wife to breast cancer. It's a merciless disease. After 5 years of visits to the cancer hospital I've come away feeling like it's coming for all of us. Glad you're ok. Sorry to...

Can you rent an actual PA? There's gotta be someone with an X32 near you.
This would be my answer as well. It does everything you need and will act as a multitrack recording interface as well.

Re: Cymbals Eat Snare

This tread is a reminder to me to always take a clean sample of each drum once the session is set up and ready to go. I frequently do but sometimes forget. So many drummers (at least ones I record) can't be coached on playing style/volume without it fucking up everything else for them and killing t...

Re: Complete list of Cassette Multi-Track Recorders and Portastudios

My biggest issues on the 488 are - #1) making headphone mixes with the cue function sucks. It's mono (which is fine) and sounds like shit (which is not fine). There are work arounds but it's a pain. #2) Getting all 8 tracks out at one time is a pain and track 8 has to be recorded with the DBX diseng...

I just have to overcome my inherent laziness. Is there a mod for that?

Re: Complete list of Cassette Multi-Track Recorders and Portastudios

I've seen that 488 mod elsewhere as well. Someone on Ebay is selling it as a service. I believe they're just tapping the 8 tracks where they come out of the DBX decode circuit. The synch input/output does the same thing except the output taps before the DBX circuit. I think the output would be a fai...

The Shure looks a lot like an SM59 which is a ridiculously great mic.

Re: Complete list of Cassette Multi-Track Recorders and Portastudios

The Vestax 6 track is a pretty impressive piece of engineering. If I could just get mine set up for type 2 tape it would be killer. I'm also rocking the 488 for most of my writing/demoing a fair amount of soundtrack work. I have a love hate relationship with it. It sounds great but the routing is a ...
