Re: moving from huge live room to small one

I moved from a big space to a converted garage. My new space is slightly larger than my old control room and it’s an all in one live/control room. I can also run a snake into the house if I need more space. I can do a lot here but there are times when it makes the most sense to rent another room for...

Get the best guys you can.
This. Even if you use a multi mic setup cut the section together and pay close attention to tuning.

Re: Show Us Your Junk - cool gear porn YouTube Channel

Don't get too into those vids. They're just Earthquaker promo commercials. The participants probably had some incentives to do them. Yes and no. There are lots of shots of earthquaker gear and it’s clear that they’re the ones behind the videos but there are no outright plugs and they are not the fo...

∆∆∆∆∆∆ this.
I would use tones to find the centre spot and then mark it on each channel with a grease pencil or sharpie.

Re: Organization: shelves vs cabinets vs drawers vs hooks

I’m in the same boat with my new room. It’s also a one room job. Storage is a bitch. - I’m looking for an old, solid and heavy duty two drawer file cabinet to store mic cables and mics. The new ones are too flimsy and seem prone to rattling. At the moment the cables are in milk crates and the mics a...

EV 665 or Senn 441 are my faves. How far it peeks over the rim of the kick determines kick/ snare balance, angling left to right balances the toms.
Am I right to think the 664 & 665 are the same mic with different finishes?

The EV664 also makes an awesome "crotch mic". I haven't tried mine on kick yet. hmmmm....
It’s good in a vintage, non-subby way. More thump than sub.

Re: The drum "Wurst Mic" technique - Holy shit!

A 635a into a Ross or MXR distortion pedal and right to tape was my secret sauce for a long time. Now I’m using a Western Electric salt shaker in this position. No distortion. It gets combined with a Reslo Beeb ribbon on OH and an EV 664 on kick. All three into a 4 channel ward beck mixer and onto o...

Re: Tascam 388 - WEIRD buzzing issue

Its a ground loop. There may be a faulty or cold solder joint on the ground pin on track 5.

Is the one shot powering off of the same outlet as the 388?
What happens if you run the pedal into a di and then into track 5? If there’s still a buzz does it go away when you flip the ground lift switch?

Re: Bantam TT to 1/4 for guitar pedal after recorded?

No 1/4” patchbay needed but you may want to look into buying or making a re-amp box. It’s a bigger issue going from the interface into an amp but pedals benefit too. If you just go bantam to 1/4 you’ll really want to watch you’re output levels. The pedal will be looking for a way lower input level t...

Mastering Anxiety

20 odd years and countless records in and I still get the sweats before a record goes off to the mastering engineer. I just sent a Latin guitar record off on Friday. Thursday night I was up late checking and double checking mixes, comparing bass up/bass down versions. Checking in the car again. Chec...

Re: Mixing template in Reaper

Another thing that helps keep levels under control without having to sweat it too much is to start with the vocal up and then build around that. If you start with the rhythm section and add in the features it's easy to start a mix a little too hot and have that keep escalating as you add parts. If y...

Re: Reverb for Drums (Analog Tascam 388)

I was going to suggest a wedge but jon beat me to it. It'll do mono in, stereo out if that helps your 388 set-up.
They're cheap and sound quite good.
