Re: EV 660

The 660 and 664 have different implementations of the Veriable D thing. The 664 has the fin with a hole in the back. The 660 has the vent strip down the handle like the RE15. The 664 also has a larger capsule. The 660 really has more in common with an RE15 than a 664 (although they're all from the s...

Re: EV 660

That one can also be surprisingly good on kick if you don't need a ton of sub. Works really well on country and 60's/70's R&B styles. I used it as a kick mic on a folk rock record that I tracked in the fall and am mixing this week. It's got great thump and attack and lets the bass take the low lows.

Re: EV 660

That's a great mic. I have a pl6 which is the same mic with a different paint job. It's basically an RE15 variant with a transformer (the 15 is transformerless). It's got decent low end but not a ton of sub. I've used it as a kick mic before when I wanted thump more than boom and when the bass was g...

Re: Ribbon dilemma.

The difference you're hearing between the 205 and Fathead likely has to do with the length of the ribbon.

Re: unhyped kick drum mic

By all accounts it was also the kick mic on some of the early 70's John Lennon records.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Picked up a ADA Guitar Cabinet Simulator DI to pair with my B15 pre-amp clone. It's helping to make people's DI bass tracks much more enjoyable to mix. It's got fewer option than the amp/cab simulator plugs I've got but somehow sounds better. Maybe it's just because I can flick switches and turn kno...

Re: How long does everyone keep the boxes your gear came in?

Gear comes in boxes?!? 99% of my stuff was bought used. Boxes are always long gone by the time I get my hands on anything.

Re: unhyped kick drum mic

Maybe all these unloved 112s can get switched over to tom duties. I always liked them there for rock & roll.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Here I am playing them on a gig. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=If5Gv_QXBik Cool stuff. Those bells cut through the live mix nicely. I've often thought my next band would be a little more multi-instrumental, pop orchestra business and wondered about glockenspiel live. These seem like one way to ge...

Re: unhyped kick drum mic

I personally love an re20 or sm7 for most natural sounding to my ears kick. Unfortunately my re20 has been in need of maintenance for a while and I dont currently own an sm7 myself. I tend to use my Senn 421 the most now. It's got a little exaggeration going on but nothing like the beta52 that my o...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Rolls Rp220 dual tube pre. Bought it cheap with a broken channel. The switching jack in the instrument input is stuck so it won’t pass the mic connection. I’m hoping to sort that out today and swap the tubes and chips for something nicer than stock. These get mixed reviews.I’ve got lots of good to ...

Re: Upping my vocal recording skills

I see you’re in Montreal. The Long and McQuade rental department is a huge resource for getting lots of mic options for little cash.
