Re: Cymbals Eat Snare

This tread is a reminder to me to always take a clean sample of each drum once the session is set up and ready to go. I frequently do but sometimes forget. So many drummers (at least ones I record) can't be coached on playing style/volume without it fucking up everything else for them and killing th...

Re: Complete list of Cassette Multi-Track Recorders and Portastudios

My biggest issues on the 488 are - #1) making headphone mixes with the cue function sucks. It's mono (which is fine) and sounds like shit (which is not fine). There are work arounds but it's a pain. #2) Getting all 8 tracks out at one time is a pain and track 8 has to be recorded with the DBX diseng...

Re: Complete list of Cassette Multi-Track Recorders and Portastudios

I just have to overcome my inherent laziness. Is there a mod for that?

Re: Complete list of Cassette Multi-Track Recorders and Portastudios

I've seen that 488 mod elsewhere as well. Someone on Ebay is selling it as a service. I believe they're just tapping the 8 tracks where they come out of the DBX decode circuit. The synch input/output does the same thing except the output taps before the DBX circuit. I think the output would be a fai...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

The Shure looks a lot like an SM59 which is a ridiculously great mic.

Re: Complete list of Cassette Multi-Track Recorders and Portastudios

The Vestax 6 track is a pretty impressive piece of engineering. If I could just get mine set up for type 2 tape it would be killer. I'm also rocking the 488 for most of my writing/demoing a fair amount of soundtrack work. I have a love hate relationship with it. It sounds great but the routing is a ...

Re: Any DAW that supports "grouping" regions for edits?

Pro Tools does this (if I’m understanding the question correctly). I’d be amazed if logic doesn’t. It’s essential for doing things like editing drums. In pro tools it’s called “group”. Select the tracks you want, command +g, name the group edit all of those tracks as if they are one. It’ll also appl...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Red Panda Context reverb pedal This thing made my EHX Holy Grail totally obsolete. I never realized what a crummy reverb pedal I was living with (for like 10 years) until I tried a better one. Every Holy Grail I've ever recorded gives off a high pitch whining sound behind the reverb. It drives me c...

Re: Studiomaster Mixdown 16-8-16

Excellent! Exercising the switches (turning them on and off and on and off and on and off) will something clean them out. Otherwise open it up and blast it with deoxit.

Re: Studiomaster Mixdown 16-8-16

Those inputs all rout through the insert (usually). So it's entirely possible that you've got signal that isn't making it past that point.
Who knows? It's an easy thing to check though. No soldering involved.

Re: Studiomaster Mixdown 16-8-16

It could be dirty insert jacks. Try a blast of deoxit and plug and unplugging a few times.
Or a trs jack with the tip and ring connected.

Re: Latest Gear You've Un-Acquired....

After years of hauling around a digi002/adat expansion and laptop for live gigs I bought a dedicated stand alone multitrack recorder by Cymatic audio. It does 16 channels at once and so far (knock on wood) has been bulletproof. Its paid for itself a few times over with comedy records. It’s such a rel...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Finally bought an EV RE20. Total impulse buy, but I've wanted one for a long time and got a decent deal on a factory repack. I always wanted one but did end up with an RE320, which is more or less a transformerless version. I like it a lot on floor tom, and it is good on bass and vox. I often pair ...

BTW only one of the two horns will have sound coming out of it. The other one is just there for balance.
Huh! I retract my advice then.
