Pro Tools free - does RAM effect latency?

This may seem like a stupid question to some but I'm new to the world of computer recording. I'm running Pro Tools free on a 3 year old IBM Think Pad (windows 98) with a Pentium 2 processor and 64MB of RAM. Can anyone tell me (before I go and spend $100 on more ram) if the problems I'm having with l...

Re: Some guys are just plain cool - Tchad Blake

He also did a Jimmy Scott record that was beautiful. Very understated and simple but it sounds so good.

Anyone know the difference between the ATM25 and the PRO25 (besides $$$$)?

Re: Hitachi Boombox

Another great way to get this sound is to track down an old Radio Shack electret stereo mic. I started using one in high school to record practices. Fifteen years later I still use it. It's my secret wepon for drums.

Re: Portable setup for collecting sounds

The Uher takes 5" reels. I found a case of NOS 5" 456 at a local surplus store. It was packaged for the RCMP (Canada's version of the FBI). I guess the Mounties have gone digital for their wire taps.

Re: help...someone wants to liscense my music

It's always safe to ask for more money. Very often in film or TV the music liscensing is one of the last things to get done. This means they try to make up for running over budget on everything else by paying as little as possible for the music.

Uher 4400 portable reel to reel. It has a built in pre that sounds great and runs on batteries.

Re: Low-pass filters

I've got a great old Altec 2 channel hi pass/low pass filter. It's passive. Sounds great. They sometimes turn up on ebay.

Re: Budget All-Purpose Microphone

Build the Tape Op DIY omni condensor. It'll cost about $10 in parts and sounds great on acoustic guitars. Take the other $190 and buy a few good used dynamics - a 421, or an EV 635a, or an EV PL-10 (baby brother to the re-20, sounds great on all kinds of things). EV mics are undisovered gems, they'r...

Re: live setup

I second what cassembler has to say. It's very hard to mix front of house from the stage. You can't really know what it sounds like in the room without being out in the room.
Why don't you spend a bit of money and hire your own tech?

Re: 1" 8 track vs. 1/2" 8 track

If this is all about cost effectiveness and bringing in business I would advise you go with a 1/2" machine. If you are working at the indie level (as I'm sure many of us are) the people you will be recording will be paying more attention to cost then sound. Not to imply that you shouldn't be strivin...

Re: need help with noise from guitar amp trying to record

Sounds like you've got a noisy amp. Not much you can do other than swap out the amp. The only other thing I would suggest is to try a different mic. Lots of condensors are hyped in the upper mids and highs. This might be bringing out more of the hiss. Try a dynamic mic or a different condensor.

Re: guitar cab mic???

I swear by omni dynamics for guitar cabs. To my ear they sound more true to the sound coming out of the speaker. I use 57's for my live sound gig because thats what the club has but I'm never crazy about how they sound. They do an OK job but who wants Ok when you can have great. I love my EV 635a (y...

Re: $10,000

I'd spend the whole 10k on building a good room. My partner and I converted my garage into a small but good sounding (and fairly soundproof) live room for about that much.
It's the best piece of gear we have.
