Re: Live Off the Floor in a Small Room

This one was done to Pro Tools.
I had thought about doing it to 16 track but went with digital in the end so that I could edit takes for the best vocal (instead of punching in for fixes).

Live Off the Floor in a Small Room

Just spent the weekend tracking the beginnings of a new record for my old (and now reunited) band. We cut the beds live (vocals and all) in my 12x20 garage studio. I thought I'd share some photos and info from the session. We're a 4 piece for this excursion. Drums, upright and electric bass, acousti...

Re: Sharing GarageBand Files

I don't know dick about garageband or macs any more, but I keep wondering if there is something non-standard in the original garageband session, like use of a 3rd party plugin or something that GB can't figure out how to properly export? Or the new version can't figure out how to import? This idea ...

Re: Sharing GarageBand Files

You need to know the exact Garageband version. Apple at some point, in their infinite wisdom, made a new version which is not backwards compatible. Maybe this is the issue? Yep. To add an extra wrinkle the IOS and desktop/laptop versions aren't directly compatible with each other either. Apple is s...

Re: Sharing GarageBand Files

No luck. The session was exported through the share songs/project menu.
On with plan B.

Re: Sharing GarageBand Files

That's my plan B. Plan A was to get the session file and do it myself but that seems impossible. Considering how easy Apple makes some things with their programs they really seem to fail on some of the details with GB. I get so many mix projects these days that have been fully or partially tracked i...

Sharing GarageBand Files

Has anybody had any luck passing GarageBand files back and forth? I've been asked to mix a track recorded in GarageBand IOS . The first step is getting the raw tracks out so I can import them into Pro Tools. I asked the client to send me the GB project file. He did but I can't open it no mater what ...

Re: Limiter on rough mixes

The quick masters usually sound like the engineer slapped ozone on at the end of the day when they were super tired and they didn't really listen to what it was doing. Which, I get it, we've all been there. Again, I'm just sayin'. Thanks Scott. This is exactly what's happening sometimes when at the...

Re: Limiter on rough mixes

I do it too. I use the Massey L2007. I use it to get the level up with as little gain reduction as possible. I find it's pretty invisible if it's not working hard (just taking off the stray peaks). Once I'm into the real mix I'll sometimes crank it up just so I have an idea of what the mastering pro...

I wanted to share this to help anyone else who might have this issue. How about you? Got any creative fixes for problematic gear?

Re: Romancing The (bad) Past

Agreed. I do a few live sessions a year and it’s always terrifying. Even with modern, mostly reliable gear that has been checked and double checked something always fails at the worst possible time. Even when I feel like the stars aligned and everything went perfectly I’ll go listen to Sinatra At T...

Re: Romancing The (bad) Past

Live recordings are a unique experience, I'd hate to add old intermittent tube mics and tape deck to it. Those cats were much braver than I! Agreed. Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

More gobos (built rather than acquired). I feel like I can never have enough......except when trying to store them when they're not in use. I hear that. last year I tore my gobos apart and rebuilt them. they used to be ~4 ft wide and 6 ft high. very difficult to store. I cut them in half and put hi...

Re: Using reverb to differentiate lead and backing vocals

It's all over the place for me. Frequently there's one reverb and the lead gets a pre-delay before hitting that. Sometimes it's different versions of the same reverb with different decay times and eqs. If the back ups are fairly tight harmonies of the lead I'll sometimes leave them dry, turn them do...
