Re: The drum "Wurst Mic" technique - Holy shit!

A 635a into a Ross or MXR distortion pedal and right to tape was my secret sauce for a long time. Now I’m using a Western Electric salt shaker in this position. No distortion. It gets combined with a Reslo Beeb ribbon on OH and an EV 664 on kick. All three into a 4 channel ward beck mixer and onto o...

Re: Tascam 388 - WEIRD buzzing issue

Its a ground loop. There may be a faulty or cold solder joint on the ground pin on track 5.

Is the one shot powering off of the same outlet as the 388?
What happens if you run the pedal into a di and then into track 5? If there’s still a buzz does it go away when you flip the ground lift switch?

Sounds like a faulty unit. I never had any of those issues.

Re: Bantam TT to 1/4 for guitar pedal after recorded?

No 1/4” patchbay needed but you may want to look into buying or making a re-amp box. It’s a bigger issue going from the interface into an amp but pedals benefit too. If you just go bantam to 1/4 you’ll really want to watch you’re output levels. The pedal will be looking for a way lower input level t...

Mastering Anxiety

20 odd years and countless records in and I still get the sweats before a record goes off to the mastering engineer. I just sent a Latin guitar record off on Friday. Thursday night I was up late checking and double checking mixes, comparing bass up/bass down versions. Checking in the car again. Chec...

Re: Mixing template in Reaper

Another thing that helps keep levels under control without having to sweat it too much is to start with the vocal up and then build around that. If you start with the rhythm section and add in the features it's easy to start a mix a little too hot and have that keep escalating as you add parts. If y...

Re: Reverb for Drums (Analog Tascam 388)

I was going to suggest a wedge but jon beat me to it. It'll do mono in, stereo out if that helps your 388 set-up.
They're cheap and sound quite good.

Re: Mixing your own band's record...

The only way I'm ever happy mixing my own stuff is to do it quickly, usually right after its tracked. Then I leave it alone and don't listen to it for quite a while. When I come back to it I can hear the few things I missed or that could be better but the intent is fully there. Sometimes I tweak the...

Re: Calibration set up Tech needed Louisville

Maybe helpful, maybe not - Mara machines has an app to walk you through doing your own calibration.
I believe that they’ll also Skype with you as you do the set-up for a fee.

Do you have an MRL tape?

Re: 1/2 4 track tape width Question

Just make sure it's really the 4 track version. The two track version has an extra 1/4 track playback head ( so you'd get stereo side a and side b) so that is technically 4 playback tracks on 1/4". You mentioned that it was used for mastering which I would equate with two track. I could totally be w...

Re: tell me about your unusual recording spaces

I'm in a converted back yard garage behind my house. Not super unusual. This my second garage space. I did the best soundproofing possible on my last garage space. The results were OK but not great. For a this one I sacrificed soundproofing for windows. The neighbors are fairly close but I'm mostly ...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Finally got my classical back from the shop. It was in having a warped bridge removed, pressed and reglued. Sounds so great and it’s finally playable. I’ve had a long journey with this guitar. I bought it super cheap about 6 or 7 years ago. It’s a blue label Ramirez from Madrid. The blue labels were...

Fantastic! Thanks.
I'm not looking for corrective software. I just need to identify problems so I can implement real world solutions.
