Re: Damaged EBay Items?

Success. Got a partial refund from the seller and a rebate on shipping costs.

Thanks for the advice.

Re: Damaged EBay Items?

Thanks guys. I contacted the seller this morning, explained the damage (and inadequate packaging) and requested a partial refund. We’ll see how it goes. I’m not above returning it if I have to.

Damaged EBay Items?

What’s the common solution for eBay stuff damaged in shipping? I just picked up a Yamaha MLA7 8 channel pre amp rack for my mobile rig. It was shipped in a really flimsy cardboard box (not even corrugated) with one layer of bubble wrap. The box was coming open on arrival and the rack now has a bent ...

Re: best Amp (not PA) for slim phatty

A Bassman (depending on the model) makes a great guitar amp but not the greatest bass amp. It can be amazing at lower volumes but if you need to keep up with a loud drummer it won't have the volume you need without getting super fuzzy. I'd look for something with a fair bit of headroom especially se...

Re: SONY reel to reel

Some of the old Sony’s have an auto stop feature triggered by a spring loaded metal wire in the tape path. If the tape isn’t threaded correctly it won’t play. Might be that? If the take up reel won’t catch and the tape is too slack then there might not be enough tape tension to get the auto stop wir...

Re: Guidelines & Best practices for Vinyl masters?

Most pressing companies will have a page buried in their websites that go over how files should be formatted and delivered. It'll usually give some technical requirements about levels and all that as well. Probably not as detailed as you're looking for but likely a good place to start.

Some good info here -

https://www.analogplanet.com/content/go ... s-part-1-0

They seem to imply that WB didn't have they're own studio until the mid/late 70s. Early stuff was done at Radio Recorders and Amigo. I could be reading that wrong though.

Re: Procedural Question - file naming and organization

Sometimes when I’ve gone down a rabbit hole of revisions with a client it’s refreshing for us to go back to an early mix for a quick listen. It’s usually not quite there but frequently has more vibe and life then the dead horse we’ve been flogging forever.

Actually, I have 2 pair of fatheads and 2 MXL 40.
Love ribbons.
I can only imagine how much better Coles or AEA may be.
10-15% but it’s a good 10-15%. Of course you don’t “need” a coles. All you need is usable gear and some good ideas. The really great pieces just make the job a bit easier.

Re: Weathervane overhead

I used to measure when I was setting overheads or doing the Glynn John's thing. After a while I decided that it made zero difference Even after measuring I still had to move the mics to find the right spots. These days I just eyeball it and then adjust as I listen back. Use your ears. There are no s...

Re: Click tracks. Love them/Hate them.

For me, a way better solution when tracking bands is to give a reference tempo at the top of each take and then kill it once they start playing. They’ll tend to speed up and slow down the same way in the same spots. I usually edit full band takes rather then punching in to make fixes and this method...

Re: recording live to Otari 50/50 2 track

You could track through the Otari to the computer. I have a lengthy thread here somewhere about a project that used this approach. It's was pretty simple and sounded great. Failing that I'd go with a mix on the board to 2 track. I've used the 5050 pres before. There ok but nothing to get excited abo...

Re: Click tracks. Love them/Hate them.

just abandon the click altogether. it's a modern thing that for some reason people think is necessary. all music was recorded without one up until maybe 20-30 years ago. and that's a lot of really great music during that time. when recording with bands in the studio i never use one, i hate them. if...
