Re: tips on screaming metal vocal?

Cool, other people that run vocals through a PA :) I've been using the SM7 for screaming devil vocals. I'll let them hold the mic too if it feels more natural to them. I leave the pop screen on also. I've used a U87 for Motorhead-ish type vocals but the sound moved around too much (screamers have a ...

Re: Anyone using small guitar amps for recording?

I like using my lil Fender 10 all the time for texture. I'll use it for vocals, guitar, and/or reamping room mics. I like the lil Marshall's also.

Re: Don't you just love...

Wow...um...wow. I sympathize for your situation. Like others said if they didn't care about performance or gear how do they expect an engineer to fix it? I think you need to be a bit bold with them. There's no ONE band that's going to ruin your career because of a session you did. Even if they know ...

Re: Tascam 488 Problem

Unless you can sync up with a time code between the 488 and your computer there's not much you can do other than recording guitar to the drums on the same machine, ie dump drums to 488 then track gtr or track guitar directly to computer with drums. Professional studios when working with two analog m...

Re: What? New Tube Console

Yup, saw this beast about a year ago or so...looks gnarly.

My control room heats up enough as it is. I'd have to Vaseline my legs every night for burn blisters.

Re: i should know this i guess

I know a few groups I've recorded that go through publishers like Bug Music, TAXI, and Tinderbox (to name a few) that help to get your songs on soundtracks, video games, tv, etc... You have to pay a yearly fee for most of these kind of groups and sometimes a fee for each song submitted (plus it does...

Re: Trident B range, who knows 'em?

Oh yes I almost forgot... Tridents are a bit noisy. There was a guy in Minneapolis that was an authorized Trident guru that said the power supplies added noise to the bussing system and monitor path. I really noticed it, that's why I asked him about it. He said there were ways of redesigning the pow...

Re: Trident B range, who knows 'em?

Hmmm, I miss my old Trident board. What I didn't miss about it... Mic pre's clip, I couldn't push it without clippity clip clip. Snap crackle pop. I did like the character of the pre's and EQ; I'd love to get one again. The reason I got rid of my Trident is I couldn't fit it in my new control room. ...

Re: Mixing and mastering classical music

I listened to classical music when I was a kid before listening to rock and pop. When I worked at record stores in the early 90's I was the classical 'expert' donning red spiky hair and tattoos. I notice a lot of subtle differences between performers, engineers, format machines, mics, and rooms used...

Re: Mixing while high: does it work for you?

Sometimes it makes me more neurotic if I'm under the influence. I'll also start monitoring at sound levels not meant to be mixed from. Sometimes it works to my favor but other times it does not (most of the time not). I'll also say stuff like, "well, we're all pretty wasted...lets have fun and I won...

Re: help finding a space

There's a room in the studio where outside noises bleed in so badly the dog next door is barking on 60% of the recordings that leave my studio. I'll also get a car driving by or the growl of a motorbike. If I'm lucky it'll actually work with the song and we'll keep it. Most of the time it just drive...

Re: Is it The Dynamic, or the 57 ?

There are a few I'd suggest: SM7 - a great overall mic. Robust. SM58 - slightly different character from the 57...more clarity. ATM23HE - somewhere between the 58 and 7. Natural, clear, but not as gloomy as the SM7 or low-mid bump like the 57/58. Soundguy again reminded me of a particular mic that o...

Re: mixing backing vocals/harmonies?

I compress the living hell out of backups and make sure their performances are solid as hell (that's a lot of hell). I'll pan them according to cadence (if any) and rarely use verb, I like mine pretty dry and in your face (not to take away from the main vocal though). Also if the main vocal timber i...

Re: Being insulted as an engineer

When I played in bands we'd have to ask our friends how it sounded in the club, we'd have no idea. Our performance would be great if we had a good monitor mix but that doesn't mean the people can hear us all that well. I never went off on an in house live sound person but I can see the frustration s...

Re: roots in tascam

Oh man yeah. TASCAM was everywhere at the time, how could I avoid it? I had a couple cassette 4 tracks at first in the 80's then I got a Fostex reel to reel 8 track (beat in to the ground) then back to TASCAM with a 1" 16 track (that I still have but it's collecting dust in the corner of my living r...
