Re: at the source or manipulation

To get back on topic... I'll generally get the tones right away without thinking I can 'fix it in the mix'. If need be I'll get a few song takes on tape then insert some compression post tape and slop mix before continuing the rest of the session (works really well if I'm recording everything live a...

Re: Soundelux copycat microphones

Dave you just introduced a new term in my head's dictionary while referring to sound, 'furry'...nice.

I know what you're saying though, I understand. To paraphrase: the Lawson had coloration to the sound while the Soundelux was more transient.

Re: Best mic at around $200 for my mic locker?

A SHURE SM7 would be my choice. I picked mine up used for around $225 but that was 5 years ago. I think they still go for about that much if you dig deep enough.

Sennheiser 421 maybe (as others suggested)? Been a long time since I used one but it's versatile and right for the price.

Re: Soundelux copycat microphones

Ahh, yes, we've talked about that before, Dave. I don't know anyone personally with one of those, I don't think. I forgot about that one but I've heard good things. That could very well be discussed here to for those that have or tried a Lawson, please.

Re: I hate the D112

I think the D112 is one of the first mics I bought once I started doing the studio stuff on my own, collecting gear here and there. I still own it but it gets further and further back in the things I pull out initially. I have enjoyed its use recently for the back/side of the drummer/floor tom paral...

Re: These claps are crap

Clap party is lots of fun and you can pretty much invite anyone you know. just be wary about sending an e-mail inviting everyone you know to a 'clap party.' OMG that is funny on so many different levels. Thanks for the laugh... Handclappin': For me ribbons sounded too 'sharp'. Condensers sound too ...

Re: old mic preamp

I haven't seen that specific one but I can chime in an educated guess... Sounds like a PA to me. Unless you were to completely gut it and redesign the circuitry from the component level for studio use I doubt it it's very useful to you; although I use older PA's for reamping guitars or to double voc...

Soundelux copycat microphones

I know it's been discussed before but I thought I'd resurrect the question again in case people have had time to digest the practical applications and comparisons to the real thing and Soundelux's line of vintage copies... What do people think of their 251/U47 copies? Are they worth it? I'm especial...

Re: gtr cab mics

421's are nice. I'm kinda mad I sold mine some years back. I remember not liking them for anything, at the time, but my style has changed since then. I might have to find another one to have around.

Re: Thoughts on sitting and standing...

Yeah I've probably seen it all. I prefer to leave it up to the 'artist'. Usually if we get in a sticky situation I'll suggest some posture changes to get what we're looking for. Usually the person singing or playing can feel it out for himself or herself. I think there's an anatomical correctness to...

Re: I guess film school is about to pay off

Dave, something came to mind while reading your great post. Schools that specialize in certain things like Film, Design, Audio Production, Fashion, and what have you don?t really focus in on your strengths. In a given film my sound design was better than my footage due to my wanting it to be good, t...

Re: Sampling for cheap?

I don't remember the model number but there's a MiniDisc rack component that works well and has footswitch options. Really I don't remember the model number (I believe it was a Sony though) and my friend who used it for exactly what you'd be using it for I've lost touch with, some 'friend' huh? It's...

CMV563 M55k capsule solution

I have a pair of CMV563's, I've had them for about 6 years and I love them to death. They have the Omni M55k capsules and I've always wanted to get at least one Cardiod M7 capsule. Well, my budget hasn't allowed it even after all these years and a couple weeks ago I was bored and did something that ...
