Re: Hope everyone in Nashville is safe

I wasn't on Music Row, but in more of the active tourist downtown areas. People I've heard from are all OK. There's a couple of terrifying videos, including a cop bodycam one where the officer walks right past the RV as its automated message is sounding. The cop says to the other cop "that like one ...

Re: Studio Embarrassments

The first place I worked had a really shallow control room with a door on one of the short walls. I was doing a hip hop session and the 'producer/money guy' had his foot in a cast. At one point, I think near the end of the day, I got up to move a mic or something and walked right into this guy's cas...

Re: 1073 SPX pre versus Shelford Channel pre?

I'm sure you would be fine sticking with what you have. It's already there, and paid for and that is also a bonus. The thing about the Shelford channel, from my point of view is the diode bridge compressor. I would rather have compression for tracking than EQ. I wish more makers made mic pre/comp ch...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Sweet. I love the acrylic hoops on the BD. How did you fix the cracks? Weld-On (now IPS/Sci-Grip) #16 acrylic glue (although from what I understand it "fuses" more than "glues" the parts together). My first time attempting it and I did a sloppy job, but after buffing it out it looks pretty decent a...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Pearl Crystal Beat. "Baby Bonham" sizes (13/16/24). just got it setup so I'm still working on dialing in the tuning and maybe a little muffling on the kick. So far sounds very similar to Vistalite's I've had or played in the past. brand new drums, but got a good deal because the kick was cracked in...

Mapex Cherry Bomb snare. I got it on the same date as I got my Gretsch set 30 years prior.

Re: Drewsonics Sherlock {SHure LEvel LOC clone]

Even when they're working, you'll ask yourself if they're broken. I think it wants a 9 Volts DC supply. The most common mod for them was to add a big electrolytic capacitor (1000 uF, 25V) across the power rails at the input, to soak up some 60 Hz hum. It also operates at mic level - you patch it in...

I just unboxed a Mapex Cherry Bomb snare drum. It's very pretty and I'll be playing it later.

Re: How to get a newly-recorded vocal to sit with samples from shellac 78s?

Make a cone out of some posterboard at either sing through it, or use a speaker of some sort on a send and put the small opening by the speaker and an inexpensive mic in the horn. That would be be fun -- I actually own an acoustic megaphone that I found in the gutter on my street. It says "Eagles V...

Re: Out of phase guitars

How do the two amps sound in mono through just one speaker? Phase is measured in terms of degrees. 180º will cancel completely, which I doubt is happening, but between 0-180º will leave more of the sound and might work. If in mono it was "a little thinner on the bass" but had something cool in the u...

Re: Acoustic Space Simulator Reverb Plugins

Check out the FREE U-he Protoverb https://u-he.com/products/protoverb/ . John reviewed it in the magazine a while ago. Instead of staying to simulate the reflections from hard surfaces, it attempts to simulate the changes in air pressure. I used it a lot on a record I mixed that the artist recorded ...

Re: I need help High Passing

i used to go up to like 75-80Hz all the time and have been slowly bringing them back down over the years. i mic both heads on toms and the low end can just be overwhelming sometimes. in dense mixes with a shit ton of processing, it helps them cut through better, is all. admittedly, i haven't even t...
