Topic: Do I need a vintage drum set?

My advice would be to get an older kit in decent shape...... the reality is that newer inexpensive kits are shit. Even the "name" brands produce shit at higher price tags. If you can find an old set of Ludwigs, from the transition period (1969-1971), you'll have a great set of drums. Also, mid 60's ...

New Tape Echo Unit

Has anyone seen the new tape echo by Unity Audio? What strikes me is that it's almost $3000, and the official company line is that it has no discernible WOW & FLUTTER. Pardon me, but isn't that precisely why most of use tape echoes? At least I do, can't speak for anyone else, but those quirks is exa...

That's funny because I love the songs on Stories, but I think the mixes suck. I think it's her worst sounding record by far.......

They actually do sound different too..... I have both, and usually prefer the D12e which is a bit more aggressive in the mids. A bit more slappy. I also find that my D12e needs less juice on the Neve than the D12..... that could be normal or not..... but, I can tell you for sure that they DO sound d...

Dude, you're not wrong....... the Adcom is a fast amplifier. It's also lean in the mid bass....... exactly what you don't want for NS-10s. I don't use NS-10s anymore, BUT, when I did, I powered them with McIntosh MC30 tube amps. They were a bit more expensive than the Adcom, but sounded ridiculously...

You can also leave them in cardioid to get a big fat low end buildup..... I quite like that myself. Ambient mics can be overly aggressive in the mids at time, and that's a nice way to tame that,.....

Eat fruit, and drink water while mixing. Helps immensely. I used to just smoke and drink coffee. No food! What a good day of mixing that turned out! Ha Ha

I always master from the tape source. I mix either 1/4" or 1/2" (depending on material), at 15 ips CCIR, then I master from that. I do however, take a 24/96 safety of the tape masters, in the event of analog meltdown. I also print to the pro tools session in real time (straight off the 2-buss), and ...

The main difference for me is that drum transients specifically are more "softened", thus making them easier to fit into space, so to speak. I find also that my mixes feel more dense when I track and mix to tape..... even if I track to tape then dump to Pro Tools..... you gain the transient softenin...
