Re: *HELP* with judging tape head wear! (PICS)

kslight is dead on. I think about this a lot, and I try to discourage the "uninitiated" from jumping into the tape world at this point. Parts are rare. Techs are expensive and/or rare. Tape is pricey. MRL's are not cheap and sometimes need to be replaced. I have 3 operational decks, and have 1 just ...

Re: Client woes... Trying to please a singer...

Or in other words, I may sound dismissive here but I work hard to understand my clients! But, reference tracks usually lead pretty much nowhere for me!

Re: Client woes... Trying to please a singer...

Often true, but there's got to be something about that track they're looking for... even if they don't know what it it is. It could be just the tone of a snare in an otherwise unrelated mix, the "attitude" of a singer rather than the vocal processing, or even just a tempo! Better to dig deeper and ...

Re: Client woes... Trying to please a singer...

90% of client reference music is completely delusional and pointless. It's usually just records they like and has no bearing on what they are creating or delivering. I just had a client point me at a new age tinkly piano record drenched in reverb, but when I put reverb on his mixes he hated it. Seem...

Re: I love the new Tape Op Design

Maybe in lieu of perfume ad inserts we bind in some NOS Ampex 499 to sniff.

Re: How high do you like your overheads (and why)?

I hear recordings where the the room is big/tall and the engineer puts the overhead pair up real high, and then there is no stereo nothing and the room tone gets louder. Seems kinda pointless? Definitely not "bigger"!

Re: I love the new Tape Op Design

Some one emailed us complaining about the smell of it! I didn't really notice. At least we don't put perfume inserts in it....

Re: Client woes... Trying to please a singer...

My comment to these kind of clients: "Yeah, um, none of the records you like were made they way you are attempting to work right now."

Jack is a great guy, and he cares about all this music stuff a lot. I've really enjoyed all the bands he's been in and have seem them all live, and never been unhappy about that!

Re: How to market your work, when you're not a full-time engineer?

Obviously word of mouth, but go to shows and talk to artists that have music you like. Offer up attractive deals but make sure you are happy too. Playing out for 12 years before I opened Jackpot! was key. So many of the cool artists that dropped by my home (Laundry Rules) studio (Malkmus, Cat Power,...

Re: Always been curious about this preamp

Well designed tube preamps don't necessarily add "warmth" and distortion. That said, there are a lot of poorly designed tube preamps out there in my opinion.

For non "monster" stands the Tama ones are the best. Just found them recently and replaced a bunch of my old booms. https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail ... gJiofD_BwE

Re: Default to EZ (mic-pre-compressor chain, etc.)

I have 100+ mics and I will use a Sennheiser 609 or Audix i5 on guitars, snare, etc. If it works, it works. There are so many factors that outweigh the minutiae of picking preamps and mics. Arrangement, performance, voicings, sounds, etc. BUT, having a variety of things at ones disposal is good.... ...

Re: If I can get a relay that would work at such low currents/voltages

I'm no EE, but you are going about this the wrong way. Obviously an external mixer, and a gate set to "duck" would be the best way to go. Or to wire in a new switch that also "tells" the music to turn off. But asking a relay to accept the "tiny" voltage of a microphone output to activate it is incor...
