Re: Garageband 2, MacMini

Apparently the mini mac RAM is not user-installable -- you need to have it installed by a certified Apple tech if you don't want to void your warranty.

Yowsa.

Re: Does anyone record mulitple Bass guitar tracks?

I kind of think that Elliott Smith's "Baby Britain" has the bass double-tracked, but I could be wrong.

Re: JoeMeek ThreeQ

In my brief experience so far, the compressor is pretty useful. It can go from really squashing the sound (I guess the classic "Joe Meek" sound) to something more like a limiter, though for the latter it's a bit more coloured than the RNC in its "subtle" mode or whatever that is. Still, I find the c...

Re: JoeMeek ThreeQ

I'm very happy with mine, but what do I know, I'm just a duffer. At $200 US, I think it's a great value for what it costs. I use it with a Roland 1880.

Re: Q: "Pretty Mary K" guitar effect?

Now THAT is a trippy sound! I'll guess guitar, distortion, wah for the eq (or an onboard parametric that's getting swept), and then something that's doing that manual/random register-shifting. It reminds of some of the sounds that Robert Fripp and Larry Fast used to get with Peter Gabriel.

Hi there,

Richard Lloyd has some interesting things to say about that phenomenon here (second question):

Re: Q: "Pretty Mary K" guitar effect?

Thanks for the suggestions -- there's an organ at parts of the song, so there would have been a leslie around for them to use. But it does have a certain phasey quality to it, too. The trouble is, he's such a good player that it can be hard tell when he's double-tracking or not -- I've listened hard...

Re: Canadian Gearheads

Hi Jes, and welcome to Montreal. The big three music stores in town are Steve's (Place d'Arme metro), Italmelodie (Jean Talon metro), and Archambault (Berri-UQAM metro). The cool place on the plateau that someone mentioned is called Musiquaire, and it's on Gilford, just north of Mont-Royal near the ...

Q: "Pretty Mary K" guitar effect?

My first post after many months as a lurker -- could anyone help me out identifying how they got that guitar sound on Pretty Mary K, on Elliott Smith's Figure 8 album? It sounds to me like a rotary or leslie effect of some sort, but I can't exactly place it. Beautiful sound, though.
