Re: MBox crashes

I think part of the problem (and my frustration) is that I really and truly do not understand what CPU really means and how it affects my recording. I had hoped that by having nothing but pro tools on my HD2, and by increasing the RAM, it would be sufficient to get some work done. I just had a littl...

Re: MBox crashes

Would you all automatiicaly advise anyone using an M Box to use a firewire drive for files? I have a G4 with a totally empty, partitioned 40 Gig Harddrive that I'd like to use specifically for Pro Tools. In my limited experimentation, though, it seems that any time I get above 8 tracks or so, I get ...

Re: Guided By Voices--what's their deal, anyway???

It's rather astounding to contemplate GBV's actually coming out of Dayton, Ohio- easily one of the most boring places on earth. As far as the actual question about their onstage drinking, it was pretty damn crazy at any of the shows I've seen them do, BUT a few key points: 1) Pollard opens a lot mor...

If I was married to Toni Haliday, you'd never see me leaving the house to go anywhere.

Re: Artistic aliases

Martin Carr from the Boo Radleys does everything under the name Brave Captain these days. I wanted to do the same with the Brill Bedroom, actually, but as soon as I started playing with other people, they didn't like it. I didn't even really want it to be a band name, I didn't think I was starting a...

Re: is 499 the same as GP9?

This is really interesting. I had assumed that people had different preferences, but I never expected people to have such specific tonal associations with kinds of tape (although it makes a lot of sense when I think about it). I usually use GP9 mostly because that's what the dude said to use when I ...

is 499 the same as GP9?

Dumb guy question #3,325: Seems like I'm able to find a bit of 499 out there. Isn't that pretty close to the GP9 formula? Would it be OK to use that for the time being? I suppose the assumption would be that it's, by definition, new old stock. What should I be watching out for? It m ight beat having...

Settle down, Francis. Besides, I still don't know anything about converters and if this turns into a giant flame war (with festering recriminations even) and I'll never get my information.

Re: dumping tape to tools

We are talking about 1/2" right? So what are the real benefits of 1/2", the ability to not worry about over's, the slight tape eq, and compression, the cool factor? Track the drums to the tape, dump to the 001 and overdub in pro tools. The A/D/A/D conversion should be enough to write off the over r...

Re: Tape Poll

Well, I would've answered sooner but I was busy convincing my wife to help me carry my Otari MX5050 in from the car (it had a play date at Roger's studio). She has a little technical nickname for it: "that heavy bastard." Calls me the same thing sometimes.

Re: A guy walks into Guitar Center...

A friend of mine was telling me about a local engineer who was recently in a suburban GC and saw an aquaintance running around with one of those fake basckstage passes on. The guy came over and gave the traditional GC greeting of "Dude, what's up, bro?" and after a brief conversation said "well, man...

Re: Quantegy closes its doors

If computers are so great for rock, why isnt anyone doing anything that is just so amazingly great with them. 20 years from now, what are going to be the classic records from last year or the year before, records where kids our age now are gonna look at us when we are older and say "wow, you were i...

Re: Paul Simon is kind of a twat, but...

Supposedly "sail on silver girl" is actually abouta few grey hairs that Simon's then wife Peggy had recently discovered, it was a little joke that he threw in as a dummy line and it stuck. So, to bring this back to recording, anybody have any insight on how they recorded those gorgeous acoustic guit...
