However, we'd like to work with the sound a little more this time, and their professor has recommended quite highly that we use some kind of compression so that the sound is more accurately captured... Anyway, I'm sure this is a given for most people (compression/compressors) but where do we even s...

Few are perfect. I've seen much (MUCH!!!) worse than a quarter-second drift over 5 minutes - Heck, that could just be tape stretch.

I don't even remember...

Vocal-heavy "Tori-ish" project this morning, Gospel-rock this afternoon, taking a break from some overly-mid-rangey metal right now.

Obviously, the reaction of the room is going to play a big role whether it's going to work well or not - But if the room is reasonably treated (broadband / bass trapping), you'll most likely prefer it (distance) over NF's.

It seems everywhere I look people talk about PEAK, and wave editor, etc. "Mastering" by definition is the creation of the master. Those programs (Peak, Wave Editor, WaveLab, Samplitude, CD Architect, etc., etc.) are capable of authoring a compliant replication master. PT is not. Mastering your own ...

Try it and do what your ears tell you. There's nothing "illegal" about it - I use an analog chain all the time. But make sure the gear in the chain is worth running through - I can't think of an exciter I'd want in there. I'm incredibly picky about compressors and EQ's, and there are few occasions w...

And I think you're missing the point of the lower signal levels. As MSE indicated, it's primarily to avoid overloading the mix bus (your final 2-track output). No, no, no --- Not even close. The point to NORMAL (let's get that out of the way - It's not "lower" - It's "normal") recording levels is t...

Oh, gimme a break, he's just trying to get you to leave him some frikkin headroom by using super long times, 8 minutes, I'm cryin laffin, Good for ya. Keep em from smashing it all to death on the 2bus. Yeah! I'm sick of crappy, overcompressed trying to pass as a mix, no depth, no imaging junk. Seco...

you have the release that slow for real? Whatever the slowest I can make it is - At least at the start. On the Vari-Mu, it seems to be 8-10 seconds at its slowest. The STC-8M is a little faster. The SSL... Too fast -- Well, not anymore... 8) But it was too fast. As was the longest attack (30 lousy ...

with your budget you could easily find a used pair of B+W matrix 805s, and still have enough money left over for an amp. i am of the opinion that those speakers will destroy anything you can buy new for under a grand. I'm all over Matrix 805's, but I don't think I've ever seen a used set for less t...

What would be a good starting point as far as ratio and attack if one were going for this glue? Ignoring the obvious answers of use your ears, depends on the material, etc. Looking for some good starting points. I tend to start with a rather long attack (100ms+) and a release time of about three da...

I tend to mix into a compressor:

* If it's a decent compressor.

* If it actually serves the mix.

* A dB or two for "glue" (if more is needed, I find out why - in the mix).

* Never for the sake of volume.

Best headphones for mixing is a pair of speakers. Wow, that's my line. it's a good one, plus it has the benefit of being true. Absolutely. The best headphones for mixing don't exist. That said - For listening? Editing and such? For $200? Grado SR225's. I really don't think there's much competition ...
