Re: Oktava ML52 mods-

Keep phantom power as far away from that microphone as possible. I will say that you needn't "fear" using this mic as I did when I first purchsed it, because of all the strong warnings about ribbon mics. It's great for a number of applications and even if you do happen to accidentally apply phantom ...

Re: what broke today? 1/11/05

The casing around the adjustment portion of my HD280's broke on the right side. They are still under warranty though so hopefully I can rave about Sennheisers customer service as much as I do about their products. All else is well.

Re: Sounds that sound like other sounds

it ended up being a really emotional and intergral part of the tune, so much so that i'm re-recording the tune for my record, and getting in my girlfriend's nieces to try to replicate that 'vocal'. Ooh that's tough that. I had a similar recording occurance. I was recording the scratch drums for a s...

Re: Sounds that sound like other sounds

Odd that you should ask this question today Rigsby. After retrieving a heavy winter coat from the front closet door this morning I noticed as I closed the door the latch made this nice resonating PING! sound. And I instantly started thinking about where I could use that in a song. To answer the topi...

It was in issue #44. However if you have just subscribed then it won't be sent to you, as it's already been mailed. You'll have to special order it or find it in one of your finer music/record stores.

Re: Cheese again

Well I've just got in and I've not really thought too long and hard about this but I think you said it right there Rigsby, it's all about the context of the music. Right now I'm listening to my friends tribute album, The Midwest, made for their bandmates brother. It's very bluesy and sometimes "chee...

Re: Glyn Johns micing technique

While I guess the question is that since there are no rack toms, the #2 mic as described in the technique will mostly be used as an OH for cymbals...would it be better to use two small di condensers as OH's and close mic the floor tom, snare, hi-hat... Just wondering if it will sound good with this...

Re: difference between Shure PG57/58 and SM57/58?

I would beg to differ with you. I think the PG52 sounds fantastic. Think of the kick sound on Wilco's 'A Ghost is Born' and that's about what it sounds like, lot's of thump and the slightest bit of definition.

Re: YOU'RE the engineer, what would you do?

I'm looking for a natural reverb sound (room mic(s)), close mic'ed drums. Not a modern sound really. I'd like the drums to be very driving and powerful. Am I being vague enough? hehe Its a challenge for me to describe this. Okay based on whqat you said and the description of your tracking room, the...
