Anyone with Universal Audio Gear

Looking for some advice here. I have just recently entered into the world of audio engineering, and am planning my first purchase of outboard gear. I was thinking of the Univeral Audio 610 Pre's and the 1176 compressor. The question I have is in regards to the improvements on the 610, when purchased...

Re: I hate to admit it: I don't understand sidechains.

Hey, ScienceOne. It say audio school graduate under your name, as it does mine. Did you go to audio school, or did that kind of show up there. When I signed up for the board I do not remember if I said anything about going to audio school or not, and I cannot seem to find out where to change that. B...

Re: I hate to admit it: I don't understand sidechains.

Right. You are triggering the compressor circuit with levels and levels only. However, you can amplify specific portions of the frequency spectrum to pinpoint locations in the material to be compressed.

Re: I hate to admit it: I don't understand sidechains.

Hmm...just thinking here. By no means a master of compression but...When you EQ the signal that is triggering the compressor's detector circuit, via the side chain, you are not making the circuit any more selective for one frequency or another, you are simply forcing the circuit to compress the mate...

Re: How do you UNGROUP selected tracks in PT?

Shift Command G is the toggle for turning group activity on and off, but I think you may be asking how to modify a group's members. Control clicking a track name that is in a group will allow you to edit that track only, even though group activity is still enabled. In order to add or delete tracks f...

Manley Dual Mono Mic Pre

Anybody own this unit that can compare it to other mic pre's they have used. The only pre's I have been able to use are on a 002 Rack and a Control 24, so I don't have any real experience time with the many pre brands. I know that mic's and converters, and placement all add into the product. I have ...

Re: Create out of phase studio monitors for live vocal track

In order for cancellation between the phase-inverted monitors you must send a mono mix, instead of whatever stereo mix you may have going. That way the same audio is, in fact, coming from both speakers. When one side is out of phase, and your equilateral placement is exact, the cancellation should b...

Re: Recording Paranormal Activity

It is interesting to set up somewhere interesting with a mic that has an extended frequency range, beyond 20 k. Supposivley trees' "talk", or at least make supersonic noises. But when you get these into an editor you can pitch them down and listen to them. Just something fun to try, and use in compo...

Re: Audio Test Gear

Not really, I guess if the frequency counter could double as a tone generator that would be useful. But no real plans to implement them musically.

Audio Test Gear

I am looking to pick up a few pieces of test equipment, namely a frequency counter and an oscilloscope, however I am not sure where to go in terms of brands and characteristics. I am sure that most oscilloscopes are equipped for uses far beyond those for which I will employ it. Any advice on what to...

Yes, I just connected a speaker that is definitely functional and the same noise is produced. So. some component or connection is failing, I would assume.

I think Tim Green's place is called Louder Studios. That is all I know about it unfortunately, aside from the gear list on the fucking champs albums.

Solid State Amp Repairs

Is it worth it to repair an old Fender Ultimate Chorus Amp?? The problem I am having is a buzzing oscillation that rides on top of the guitar tone, which sounds normal otherwise. This buzzing oscillates at varying frequencies depending on which note I fret on the guitar. The buzzing is greater in am...

Tracking electric guitar

While attempting to track an electic guitar, I have faced a great deal of difficulty in controlling the noise that the amp is producing. The amplifier is by no means a high quality amp, so I am assuming a nicer model may reduce this noise. It seems to increase when FX pedals are inserted into the ch...
