What is it about old receivers that make them better, more musical, etc? Is it simply the fact that you can cheaply-purchase used what was top-of-the-line back in the day? Is it a component thing?

I'm with ya. As a child of the 80's, I've retained an appreciation for this style of production. I don't necessarily think this album is swimming in 'verb, it is just so rich. How do they sound so big yet retain so much breathing room in those mixes?
