Re: Drum overheads: Gefell, Sony

I’ve read that “lean bass” thing about the UM70, and right now I’m using it close in my untreated living room. Sounds decent. The C38b is even across the spectrum, I think, not massive on the low end for sure, but not lean. I’d have to listen back to things I tracked a couple months ago. So maybe th...

Re: "On kicks with different mics like ya do"

Since I got an AEA R92 it has lived on a Princeton amp. That just works. Sometimes I'll pull the ribbon aside to do other duties, but its home is right on the grill of the Princeton.

Drum overheads: Gefell, Sony

I have a little basement studio that is currently disassembled as we wait (and wait and wait) for contractors to do some work that will keep the walls from collapsing. What audio work I do right now is with a crappy Tascam 2-channel interface, a mic or two and a laptop. Before the disassembly, I had...

Re: How To: Replace an 8-Track R2R with a Laptop

That's kind of a fun question. Besides the 24-track Alesis decks there were also lots of 8- and 16-track hard disk recorders. You could maybe find an Akai DR-8 for nearly nothing. But backing those up was a pain, compared to the reel to reel deck where you just put a new reel on. For the laptop appr...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Years ago you could get a Gefell UM70 for $600-800-900, depending on how far back you go. Well, not anymore. But this week I bought a UM70s off Reverb for $1275, which is more than I've ever paid for a mic. But I have high hopes. Selling u67 tribute mic that never blew me away, and a CAD m179, just ...

Re: Fuzz Bass

I use a malekko diabolik pedal in my live rig. Has a clean/fuzz mix to keep the low end.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

So last night, through the magic of Craigslist, I traded a 16-year-old Aprilia scooter that was not getting any use for a Korg PE-1000, which is pretty damn cool:

Re: Step Up In Active Nearfields

I did some work in a local studio and sat in for a mix on Focal Solo 6's. Sounded great. I wondered if I could afford Focal. At a local pro audio dealer I heard Eve, Neumann, Focal. I tried to like the Focal Shape 65s, which were lower priced, but the Solo 6's sounded much, much better, and I left d...

Aphex (B&B) compressors

I have two very ancient Aphex CX1 compressors that actually sound better bypassed most of the time, unless I'm doing something gritty.

I've had them for over a decade and have never calibrated them or done anything. It May Be Time.

Who services these? I hope someone knows.

I would absolutely get the Focusrite up and running again. The AD card is excellent. The ISA428 with the AD card is one of the best products ever put out on the market. I'm thinking just repairing it is the way to go. The ADC is integrated into the pre, it works well. Sounds decent. The ADC may be ...

It has already been mentioned, but I think using dynamics mics on almost everything might contribute to that sound.

I did swap ADAT cables. Because MOTU did a great job designing the 1248, I have 14 inputs just using the analog inputs. But for some reason I miss having the +8 of ADAT, even though I typically can track things with more like a dozen inputs. And I'm running a couple of the Focusrite mic pre's into t...

Sorry if that wasn't clear. I suspect the ADC card in the Focusrite has gone south. The MOTU interface is behaving correctly. The MOTU interface was getting clock over ADAT in the past, and that worked for me for years. Now that I'm running everything into the MOTU through analog inputs cuz ADAT is ...

Convertors: Focusrite vs Behringer. No, really.

For almost 10 years I've been using a Focusrite ISA428 4-channel mic pre as a cornerstone of my setup. It has the digital converter card running 8 channels to my interface via ADAT. IT looks like the card is dying, I think. When I turn the pre on EVERY LIGHT on the face of the Focusrite lights up an...
