+1. Those little boxes are pretty cool. I like it on guitar too.

Re: Mix Objectivity / revisions

. On this project we pushing like 7-12 mixes of every song. That's a lot more and that means a lot more time and $. ... Also I am also trying to find ways to encourage them to take listening breaks for a few days for the sake of objectivity without being condescending because many artists will list...

I like that analysis, gonna callit, "The Garges 2 outta 3". 8) It's a good set of guidelines for sure. Another, and I'm veering away from the OP's topic a bit, is the Good, Fast, Cheap triumvirate. You can only pick two, and you're not going to get the third option. Let's say you have a project, do...

Another fun option that I don't think has been mentioned is to do a wet/dry setup with 2 amps. And where you split the signal in the signal path lets you use OD/fuzz pedals on both amps but modulation or delay/reverb on just one. Obviously not as flexible as re-amping, but you've got the option to b...

I feel like the outcome of this potential project depends less on track assignment and more on selecting the right artist/band for this recording medium. I might be wrong though.

I've really come to appreciate Live at the Regal , which is totally worth a listen. Though he gets referred to a lot simply as a guitarist, I'm really blown away by his vocal performance. Either you can connect with the audience or you can't, and you can hear a master at work on that record. It's fu...

A dreadnaught or jumbo acoustic can definitely be too boomy for some stuff, especially if it's an acoustic part in a dense rock mix. But even for solo. Carving out some lows is definitely something to look into, or at least using a low shelf setting that some mics/pre's have. For less boomy sources ...

To me it sounds like the dark parts of the city I rarely visit, and never think about.

I really enjoyed it, it was the perfect soundtrack to the short story I'm working on as I listened (quasi-futuristic). Man, those drums in the middle of "Sea" are absolutely crushed.

I recently recorded/mixed a band, which is a new thing to me. While I would get settled and ready for a mixing session I would throw on a reference song or two just to get the sounds in my head and hear it on the speaker system I was using. But I didn't go crazy A-B-ing or listening back and forth w...

I have Native Instruments Guitar Rig 5.0 right now. It's the demo so you can't save presets and it boots you after like 20 min., so I usually dial in a sound, make a mental note of what I used, log back in and record what I need to get done. Whether or not it sound as good as the real amps/cabs/effe...

So if a 57 sounds best, use it. Maybe play some tricks on your insecurity, like buying a fresh SM57 and reserving it for studio vocals only. Get a fancy little hardwood box for it when you're not using it. I love it. Life is full of little opportunities to trick ourselves into the place we want to ...

I've been mixing down some songs I recorded for family/friends' band. Saturday we're wrapping up the tracking with some vocal and acoustic guitar overdubs. I shall post a song or two and pics when all is said and done. occurred to me that it's likely no one really cares... but oh well. It's he...
