Re: 3:1 Rule...?

I think that's it. Sound waves traveling toward both mics are going to hit each mic at slightly different times because the snare is not a single point in space, but rather a collection of points at different distances from each mic. Sound from one side of the snare drum will take longer to reach on...

Re: Being insulted as an engineer

I've always considered conflicts like this to be based on deeper issues than just "who's the sound guy?". Whenever I meet someone who has excessive amounts of attitude I try and relax and work with it. I have kicked a client out of my studio for being an asshole. It's like a restaurant..."We reserve...

Re: 3:1 Rule...?

I've always found this rule works well for setting distances between stereo pairs. Say my drum overheads are two feet off the cymbals. I might try and get them four feet apart...

Sometimes it's fun to get out the old tape measure for all of this as well!

3:1 Rule...?

So we know about the three-to-one rule when working with stereo pairs. I am looking for similar suggestions using two mics in the same line of sight at different distances from the sound source. EG. a kick drum mic and a room mic, or a guitar amp mic and a room mic. Please add any simple shortcuts y...

Re: Kick Drum sounds, yo......

I use an Audix D6 and if I want more boom I'll throw my M147 out in front of the kit as well...in fact, I really dug Fletcher's post about that as well.

Re: Pardon my ignorance, but who the hell is this guy?

Yes, thanks Teleharmonium.

I wouldn't rush to judgment about who can do what however. A lot of the guys from the scene 30 years ago were and are still RIPPERS!!!!!

Portland Guitarist Looking for Bass and Drums...

I like to jam as some of you may well know, I also like to write really hooky songs and tunes that have all sorts of melodies and distinct changes. I have been dreaming about a trio for awhile now and Portland has been challenging in finding new people to jam with. I have been through and through th...

Re: Audio Production Lab at Seattle Art Institue

I could say a few words having graduated Seattle AI and a private university. I went through the Seattle program at a rapid pace and was unable to book any quality length of studio time in the analog rooms. I was able to get copious amounts of ProTools, Avid Mediacomposer, and tons of great live sou...

Re: benefits of balancing studio?

I have had luck with both balanced and unbalanced. It all depends on what you can hear, right?

What has made the biggest difference for me has been using a really well made balanced power supply. Especially since I'm a digital guy and I like all my ducks to be in a row, as it were.

Re: Shure Beta 52 vs. Shure Beta 52A

I don't know if this helps, but I used to think the 52 was a low output mic. Turns out I just wasn't being aggressive enough with the pre. Sounds simple to me too. What made it interesting was that over the same period of time I found that the mic placement made as much of a difference as the pre. U...
