Re: Gain Staging - Tracking/Mixing
I've gone thru a decent amount of material on gain staging, but still have a few questions.. From my understanding, the level of each individual track should be -18dbFs. Does this mean that should be the recording level? The size of the waveform I get, when tracking at -18, is significantly smaller...

Traynor Custom Special Reverb head (often used for bass with a vintage 1x15 Traynor cab). ooh, I've got an old TR-1 that looks like this one -- https://reverb.com/item/18210903-1968-traynor-tr-1-tube-reverb-unit-black-tolex very springy! I love those. I've had chances at them several times and regr...

Re: Micing acoustic guitar live recording with loud band
Huh. Do you end up having to EQ a lot ? I feel like it would sound so boomy and dark.

Re: Micing acoustic guitar live recording with loud band
If you're not in a room with really good acoustics, good luck. It's so hard to get the bleed from the other instruments to sound good and not too overwhelming in the guitar mic AND get a good guitar sound. If you deadened up your space, you'd probably have better luck. I've tried it a couple times a...

Re: Potentiometer grease?
Hello all. I’m reconditioning some 40 year old gear and I would like to thoroughly clean some slider pots. I was wondering if any of you tech-heads had any suggestions for a kind of grease that will give the sliders a nice drag/friction feel without impeding the resistive qualities or attacking the...

Re: I need help High Passing
oh yeah, I always HPF in the mix unless I know absolutely 100% that I want to engage the HPF on a preamp going in (and I do that on some things when that button is available - most of my preamps don't have one). For example, I will never want or need < 80Hz on a tambourine or shaker track. I mostly...

Re: MDR-7506 or ATH-M50x vs all the DT’s
The Beyers are great. So clean and clear sounding. I miss the pair I had years ago and have no clue why I haven't gotten another. I have and use a pair of the M50x's regularly. I like them a lot. I found that the low/low-mid took some time to adjust to, in terms of translation, but overall, they're ...

Re: Getting phase right on a drum kit
Drumsound, your method was helpful beyond description. As I followed it, the light bulb went on in my head! I do have a question, however. When flipping polarity on the drum mics one at a time to avoid phase cancellation, are there certain drums (such as the kick) that you definitely want to make s...

Re: Getting phase right on a drum kit
Drumsound's mono/one speaker method is legit. I'm sure that I must have read that here many years ago and have been doing it ever since. I think it's a lot faster for making sure the low end sounds right than keeping stuff panned and I think it gives a better assessment of how the bass drum, toms an...

Re: I need help High Passing
Does anybody high pass toms? 80 Hz? Maybe not the floor tom? If they need to be high-passed, yes. Not as a rule thought. If I do, I employ a HPF + resonant bump (I use Fabfilter EQ or Louder than Liftoff Chop Shop plugins for this) and scan until I actually hear the fundamental of the drum get bigg...

Re: I need help High Passing
HPF's are certainly useful, but approaching their implementation with any sort of rules pertaining to which frequency ranges get cut on which instruments is a mistake in my opinion. Every song, instrument, amp, drum, etc. is different and should be treated according to what the mix calls for. To pig...

Re: Two parter: Getting mic bleed to work for you, and the phase differences between nudging tracks and moving mics.
My quoted method doesn't take all that long. Especially if you aren't trying to reinvent the wheel of mic positioning. That coupled with the fact that it yields better tracks makes it worth the time. If you don't do it in tracking, someone will need to do it in mixing... I've always done it this wa...

1. This thread rules. 2. Just built one of these https://buildyourownclone.com/products/silver-pony-2 for that Klon sound. So far it's great! Idiotbox Effects has a Klon pedal called the Han-Taun and I bet it rules. I haven't used it, but I have used his Blower Box and the Ron Swanson (lol) fuzz an...

Purple LILPEQR EQs (x2) Tell me more about these! I can't yet. The HF pot on one of them felt very different (much looser/less resistance) than the others, so I had to send them back to Purple to get them matched up for feel. I didn't even rack them. I will definitely report back though. Tha...
