Re: Best vocal mic under 2K?

My Pearlman 47 (said to be pretty similar to the TM1) has been really nice to have. It makes people excited about singing when they hear it, which is really what it's all about. Are there areas it shines other than vocals? I always get weird about putting expensive mics in front of guitar amps and ...

Re: Overdrive pedals educate me

I grabbed one of his KWB-inspired pedals he built for that charity sale a while back. Can vouch for his skills. That pedal rules. Excellent build quality. Speaking of speaking of (speaking of) Rats, I've wanted to try one of his Black Box's for a while. The KWB Distorter is probably the last versio...

Re: Best vocal mic under 2K?

Also Pearlman TM1 sneaks in just under the wire After a lot of research, I ordered a Pearlman TM1 and an SM7B. Blew the budget a little bit, but I am really looking forward to trying these out. Thanks all for your recommendations, I learned a lot. Nice! I had a pair of Pearlman TM-2's for a bit and...

Re: Overdrive pedals educate me

On the "Treble Booster..." front, The Balls Effects "Balls Deluxe" is one of the finest feedback generator pedals that I have owned. Will also get you a lot of "Classic Coke" treble booster sounds. Cannot say enough good things about that pedal. https://ballseffects.com/distortion/balls-deluxe/ I g...

Re: How important is it to mic the bottom of a snare?

One thing that consistently blows my mind, is everyone seems to use a 441 under the snare. You put a 57 on top, but the $700 actually great sounding mic goes on the bottom? It has to do with microphone price and drumstick exposure. 57 head will break way before a 441 will though. Mine has a few den...

Re: Overdrive pedals educate me

This is interesting. What about the sound post-mod makes it worthwhile vs. just getting a more transparent/natural type of overdrive in the first place? I'm a Rat lover, so I'm curious. Good question. I'm a longtime Rat lover too. I have used one as my main distortion since 88 and then one day I bo...

Re: Overdrive pedals educate me

Best of all, I have been using a modified Rat for 20 years. I modify them by putting green LEDs in the feedback loop of the op-amp and another pair of red LEDs where the usual clipping diodes are. It makes is a far less gainy and very dynamic drive. Very transparent and natural sounding. Put a boos...

Re: What do you hear in this vocal?

Could just as easily be an SM7. It's pretty dark, so a LDC wouldn't be my first guess. I'm actually not hearing a ton of obvious compression, but that could just be because the engineer used a comp that stays out of the way. It's all pretty clean Also, holy Nick Drake worship. Ha! Re: Overdrive pedals educate me

Soul Food seems cool. I've recorded a couple players that use and love them. I've been meaning to check out EHX's Glove OCD clone now that the Fulltone dude has exposed himself as being a total asshole. I've relied on the OCD as my always-on boost for 10 years, so that was a bummer. I seem to remem...

Re: How important is it to mic the bottom of a snare?

I hate bottom snare mics and try to avoid them at all cost, BUT sometimes you need it. I notice a pattern where if the drummer is really good at tuning his/her kit, it's totally redundant. When that isn't the case, I tend to use one. Or when the the drum is being tracked really dry and dampened. The...
