Re: How high do you like your overheads (and why)?

On that note, o/h height is kind of relative to room size/ ceiling height. Lower also tends to do better in smaller rooms.

Re: Monitors - Hanging Instead of Stands

I've been to a couple studios where they mounted monitors to arms extending from the wall - 2.5" metal pipe type deal with an elbow and pivots at the wall flange and monitor. No idea what you'd call this or if it's a "true studio product."

Re: Jack White Live

I've been to a couple live shows recently where the singer basically had to beg the crowd to get off their phones for just one song. Say what you want about luddite-ism, but yeah.
Just got BHR last night. Great stuff.

Re: Fuzz Bass

Diode types sound different in a fuzz because they clip at different voltages. Sort of a "fuzz clip threshold". Some compression ahead of a fuzz can give control over how you hit the clip.

Re: Help Mixing Shakers

So long as we're talking about homemade shakers... some of my favorites are tea balls filled with BBs, wrapped in gauze tape and screwed onto drumsticks to be shaker-mallets. That way your shakes are always perfectly timed with your drum strikes. For recording shakers alone, I do the same as most o...

Re: Help Mixing Shakers

Are there hi hats, pick-attacky acoustic guitars, stuff like that? Decide whether to work in unison or have a push pull dynamic, which will guide your panning/ eq decisions.

Re: Tube pres that function like Altec 1566A or 1567A?

Still pull out the 12ay7 on occasion. It's okay. If I'd hung on to the second one I might use them more often. I built some 1566 clones with utc ouncer inputs and junkbox output trannies. Relatively easy project, very satisfying results. One of my favorite bass DI's. The circuit is only a handful of...

Re: Fostex G16

Sticky tape can also manifest as slow RR/FW. My 38 came w/ a stock of "good" 456. Chucking it in favor of some RMGI made all the difference.

Korg ms20 mini. Pairs well with my Univox sr-120.
Tried to get an Ampeg Gemini VI, but UPS smashed it. Have a Gemini V on the way, we'll see.

Re: K&M stands?

Nick, are you referring to the On-Stage Stands SB96? I've been on the fence about that one vs the similar ones like Ultimate Support mc-125, Atlas sb-36, and the K&M Overhead. I'd like a pair of the Atlas or K&M, but money. Disappointing to hear joninc's experience with K&M. The local music store ca...

Re: electrical engineering education/knowledge

I took some EE classes at the local community college a few years ago. It was of value, but IME perusing Groupdiy and some of the pedal building sites will get you into directly applicable theory and lead to a more holistic type of learning. Read, read, read, and stare at schematics. Not that I'm an...
