Re: Isolation with a drop ceiling: fantasy or reality

If a full sheet of rock fits, I'd go for it if the money was there.

I quite like the RM BIV russian stereo ribbon which can be had for $300-ish depending on exchange rates.

Good to know, been thinking that should be my next mic purchase.

Re: Isolation with a drop ceiling: fantasy or reality

The 2x6s are actually meant hang the RC off of, because the beams/joists themselves are reaaaallllyyyy wonky and warped (110+ year-old building) They are really big structural beams, not standard floor joists like in a house. The 2x6's would be nailed perpendicularly between them just to have a nic...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

RSE TPC-1 came today, lovely little piece of Russian homebrew at a stupid good deal.
Ordered a jamman vocal looper today on account proaudiostar is blowing them out @ $19.99 and I've already got the regular one to sync
'63 Conrad violin bass I picked up a couple months back.

Re: Hooking up a Tascam 388 to a Pioneer SR 202W Spring Reverb

The effect and aux loops are submixers. You create a mix that then goes through your 'verb, delay, whatever is in the loop. So if you are using the Pioneer as outlined in this thread (aux out to left Pioneer input, right Pioneer output to aux return), things have been mixed before reaching the Pione...

Re: Heavy Guitar - Taming Low-Mids with MBC or DynEQ

How about, an mbc is like compressing only one driver in a 3(or however many)way speaker. Deq is more along the lines of training a gremlin to make a specific eq move every time it hears a specific sound.
Which is all fine and well until you feed your mix to an auratone after midnight.

Re: CITES, or how they harsh yer wood

Some glitch in fleaBlah's GSP, misinterpreting vintage tubes as containing toxics - mecury gas/ radioactive material.

The other option is to use it as a mixing effect, running pre-recorded signals out of the interface, into the limiter, then recording the output back into the interface.
At which point you could start reading about stuff like "round trip latency" and "parallel compression".

Re: Fuzz/Distortion/Noise when recording Bass Direct to Reel

Different results at different speeds coupled with your low freq spec and preferred tuning and tone makes it sound like you might be up against the head bump. http://www.endino.com/graphs/ You(r tech) may be able to finesse the alignment to work better with the machine's limitations. Or you might ha...

Re: Fuzz/Distortion/Noise when recording Bass Direct to Reel

Never noticed this w/ my 388, tho I too was mainly mic'ing brighter bass when it was in heavy use. Doesn't happen on my 3440. Spitballing... Does judicious hpf lessen it w/o sacrificing too much of yr tone? Any track bleed associated with it? Has the machine ever had a recap? Does it happen with a d...

Re: MARIK mod on Cascade Vin-Jet ribbon

Ribbons are ancient tech. The basics were laid out decades ago, but the devil is in the details. A lot of "better" modern mics are essentially"pre-modded." vvv's 23L, and my 46c's, for instance, have upgraded transformers and were ribboned by Jon. My 46c's and your Vin-Jet are the same basic guts in...

Bipolar caps - eliminate?

Poking around a yamaha pm180 and see a lot of bipolar electrolytics in there. I've read that these can degrade the sound, since a cap is already problematic and these are in effect 2 back to back. This thing runs off a bipolar supply, and I'm not seeing dc across several of these - so if they're not...
