I like my modded apex 205 with the Lundahl LL2913. The mic is $80, the transformer is $60, and the mod is very easy. Rules on piano, great on guitar cab (very sensitive), sweet on kick. I need another one so I can do blumlein on OH and acoustic/vocals. For $300 you could get a pair and mod them you...

I pretty much agree with minorleagues. If it's really pro quality stuff, 500/channel is a doable price point and would compete well with what's out there, although I don't think I could ever afford 10x$500. Something under 2K is about the max. I would expect any non-pro to pay. 10 is a funny number ...

This applies to my favorite bitching-disc, the X, "Los Angeles/Wild Gift" reissue. Man, the vinyl rules, boy the CD sucks. Ray Manzarek's string-synth on "Sex and Dying in High Society" sounds so full and lovely on the vinyl and painful and piercing on the CD. I'm with ya, Mr. Tatertot. Yeah, you k...

Another theory is that they were ripped using what would now be considered obsolete digital technology, i.e. 16 bit encoding and/or pretty inferior A/D converters.

My thoughts on DIY and cost-effectiveness - You will have to invest about double the price of the cheapest piece of gear in a given category and you will finish with a piece of gear equivalent to one costing about 10 times that price. So you want a guitar amp? bottom end of that is maybe $200, inves...

Did they actually burn CD's with the RIAA curve applied? Wouldn't they come out ungodly bright and thin?

It's doesn't even fucking play in STEREO correctly. It doesn't??? Not the 3 I am around and subjected to on the road. It sounds like it stereo summed to mono, but i'm still uncertain what it truly is. The example i'll use is what originally brought this issue to my attention. A now defunct band fro...

Hm, US Recording Media says This tape is the same as SM911 except on a thinner, long play 1 mil [as opposed to 1.5] base. Same performance but longer record time. But then again, they have a vested interest... although I would expect them to have a vested interest in selling less tape at a higher co...

It's doesn't even fucking play in STEREO correctly. It doesn't??? I agree with thetathetatheta.... about the best minds stuff, however I think at a certain point, the "no expense spared/we'll worry about the future later" attitude caught up with them (PCB's, DDT, lead, mercury, asbestos, etc..) Not...

Here's the standard RCA version

Calls for a 7025 but I read somewhere that it specs out slightly better with 6SL7's. Worked great for me.

Thanks, A-Barr, Ya, the B+ (CTed for fullwave) is no problem and meters correct voltage. If I'm understanding you correctly, points D an E probably offer different voltage options, right? That make sense. The question remains, what is that single tap (D or E) referenced to.. chassis ground? I've be...
