Still have a 234 in pretty darn good condition. Although I've transferred everything of consequence to HD. I keep it clean and actually run it now and then to keep the thing loosened up.
It does have a pleasing sound to my baby boomer ears.

Phantom power from a line input? May I assume an outboard power supply? I have an old Shure supply around here somewhere. I might have to dig it out and try this with a few of my microphones.
mine sit around getting stiff and arthritic and when i pick them up all they do is complain about how things aren't like they used to be. of course, most of my guitars are between 30 to 40 years old.
In my case, I?m the one who?s arthritic. My oldest guitar doesn?t pay much att...

The whole song kind of sounds like it was recorded in a parking garage...but in a good way. I wonder if they used an actual reverb chamber instead of some electronic version?

Sorry, I was talking about the feed to the camera. The catch here is the necessity for the video guy to have something usable. I'm happy to provide the video people with the still hypothetical multitrack files for editing later, but I don't think the organizers have a clue as to what they?re asking ...

There?s got to be a million of us who have been unable to have a dedicated workspace for recording. Beetle put it well when he said that the gear doesn?t matter without the space. Even if you have a house, remodeling specifically for a studio has to be secondary to the needs of your family. With any...

Speaking in stereo terms, are there any suggestions as to how I should handle the panning of two pianos? One will be the lead instrument and the other will be an accompaniment. The thoughts there were either to put the second piano hard panned L/R and the first piano more centered, or to follow the ...

This thing happens on the 28th of February The idea of multi-tracking is tempting, but considering the age of my DAW, and the fact that I don?t think my Motu 828II and Alesis AI3 are capable of handling the dynamics that will be thrown at them, I?m just going to record stereo 24/96 to a Sony D50. Wh...

Thank you guys, all great information. Basically it?s a small auditorium / conference room. Two hundred people I believe I heard. The camera will probably end up being one of the semi pro, one third inch three ccd models, shooting standard DV. It will be aBLE TO take +4, BUT my experience with these...

Use what you got, make it work.

Although this isn?t about making a record, it is about trying to record an extremely difficult (for me) live music situation without a lot of suck factor. I would have posted this on a sound re-enforcement, or video forum, but because the issue is about music recording, I felt that yoos guys should ...

In the wonderful world of video, file management and backup protocols became even more important once we switched from recording on tape to recording to P2 solid state memory cards. Because the cards are a couple of grand each, and are meant to be reused, there is no original tape to put on a shelf....
PS - styrofoam will give you no acoustic/sound benefit whatsoever, though it will help with heat retention (I assume, depending on its insulating properties).
Plus it's highly flamable, gives off nasty fumes as it deteriorates, and is prone to growing black mold in high humidity...

I've had this issue since movies were Beta or VHS Hi Fi. I also had several early CD's make me jump for the volume control before blowing a speaker. My low budget solution was two cheap stereo compressors. One to gently squeeze. The other set to limit. It worked pretty darn well.. I doubt it would w...

A couple of other decks to look out for. I have a Tascam 234 industrial four track recorder that's pretty darn cool. It's a recorder only, without the mixing board. It is a beast. My regular cassette is a Denon dual capstan , three head machine that has manually adjustable bias and Dolby HX circuitr...

This got me thinking. It's just the kind of thing that can screw up a precious creative moment. You just want to hit the damn button at the right time and play. Doing location sound for video, I'm always trying to chase down and destroy stupid noises. So I just pulled out a rather loud general purpo...
