Well, if you are building from scratch, you have a lot of options. I would get some numbers on density, there are probably materials that have more mass than OSB. For example, for your exterior wall, you could do OSB and then cement board. Or OSB-drywall-OSB sandwich. If you are working with a contr...

Switch between multi-channel out and stereo out frequently

I was wondering if anyone else has run into this issue, and come up with a clever way to deal with it. In my studio, i'm running logic on a macbook pro, out to a 16 channel output interface, which is connected to my mixer. Individual tracks are assigned to ouputs to map to the mixer channels, pretty...

I built my studio in a prefab residential detached garage that is in my backyard. The garage is 20x22, I build the studio in one of the garage bays. The other half is still for garagy stuff. The garage itself is traditional stick built, I say prefab because they built most of it off site, drove in t...

You should probably move this to the recording techniques forum, if you can. You'd probably be best served with a small tabletop mixer that has stereo inputs and effects sends. Something like the Mackie PROFX8 would give you everything you need and more. Plus extra inputs for any gear you add down t...

i would get the extra length. In my experience, as soon as you get all your cabling just right and nice and neat, you find you need to move something , and every cable is about a foot too short.

Sweet looking board, it's gonna be killer. You may want to consider shoving one of these in the summing section, take things to the next level. http://classicapi.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=22_46&products_id=403 Interested in Matrix Audio Systems - couldn't find any info on them. I have a Stu...

You should buy that Ghost. I used one for years, and they are a ridiculous amount of console for the money. The routing is matched by no other console ever made ever. And those mods will surely take it to the next level. Perfect for what you are describing.

Hey - I have a couple different 16 channel boards that you could mix together to create a weird/cool hybrid console. They are Studiomaster 16:4:2 Carvin MX1688 Tangent 1602ax The studiomaster and carvin are in good shape and work well, except for some age related crackles on the pots. The studiomast...

I just finished a garage build just like yours, with 2 sets of windows. I made my own windows for the internal wall out of 1/2 glass panes. The existing garage windows were single hung vinyl so the top half is fixed. So I made the top half of my windows fixed in place as well. The bottom half of my ...

I still love my Oktava 012's. They are super versatile. A few more suggestions. Get some moon gels (http://www.rtom.com/moongel.htm), try them on the cymbals. Or blue painters tape. They can really help tame/alter cymbal sounds. It's like instant aging. Experiment with placement. Get a good ride and...

Re: Recording a band separately vs all together (same room)

--when recording all together, but the recording quality suffers--and mixing options become limited, if not a downright headache.. Why do you find that to be the case? What are the symptoms? I record live in a small garage- 9'x18', with a loud drummer, 2 guitars and bass. When I solo the guitar amp...

Remote producer

So in the current world of computers and internet and everything, we can now send projects to be mixed anywhere, and have musicians track from anywhere. But has anyone worked with a remote producer? I'm starting to work on a new album and would like to work with a "producer" in the traditional sense...

That said, I'd like to try that shit in my kick drum. Dunno why. This is a good idea, at least worth trying. I'd start by lining the inner shell with the foam. Make a long strip the same length as the circumference of the drum. And the width just a bit wider than the depth of the drum, so when you ...
