Re: soft-knee compression algorithm?

Tom,
Cool, good luck with the project. Glad I could help.

Dave,
Thanks for the info. They're probably the exact same unit, with yours having a makeup gain control. (cool.) Good luck with the move to LA, by the way. I love the weather out there.

Good deal on time for a cool room in NC

Jay Howard Production Audio in Charlotte, NC is offering a great deal on time for the Summer. It's "buy 8 hours, get 8 hours free." They do lots of broadcast stuff, but have a great, cozy little room for doing music production. Good gear (new and vintage) and good mic selection (same). 2 pianos, Ham...

Re: soft-knee compression algorithm?

By the way, mine work fine without a line amp, especially as inserts. They're kind of medium to dark grey.

Re: soft-knee compression algorithm?

Yeah, I think my 3310s came out of a Melbourne (or so I was told). It was used often as a talkback limiter, but according to the spec sheet, Neve also designed them to be used on "every channel of the console" and as a point on the patchbay for outboard use. I've got a review of them in the next iss...

Re: Phasing theory RE DI'd AND mic'd bass guitar

So I would imagine his (primarily frequency) settings are changing "all the time," too, right? Awesome. If he's doing audio for TV, it's a little easier for him (albiet time consuming) to get it right. Especially if he's doing audio editing with a Fairlight. There's a guy here in Charlotte, NC named...

Re: soft-knee compression algorithm?

Tom, You're pretty much right about the transition that occurs in soft knee compression. I know it seems like a silly place to look, but the manual for the Alesis 3630 compressor is actually a good resource for someone wanting to understand the basics of compressor operation. Sorry I don't have a li...

Re: MIC CHAINs that werk ril goood

Try the new Shure KSM 141 in cardioid on snare. Hopefully, it'll change your opinion of the 57.

Re: replicating digital EQ with analog EQ

By the way, I like the way the 9098 mic pre sounds. Can't say that I've used the EQ, but I am an Amek fan.

Re: replicating digital EQ with analog EQ

I think that that entire Madonna album sounds like ass. True, there's some really neato digital edits and stuff that could never be done with all analog equipment, but having had to engineer sound-alikes of "Music" and whatever that next single was, I can honestly say I think that album sounded terr...

Re: Boring clean guitar sound...Help.

First, does the guitar setup sound good to you in the room? If not, play with that, then try to achieve the sound that you hear out in the room through the control room speakers. Remeber to keep the front of the amp away from reflective surfaces (walls, other amps, etc.). I like to put the back side...

Re: What is your favorite $500 or less Microphone??

One mic?

Audio Tech 4050.

Multi pattern, sounds good on everything, great on most things. Still don't like them as overheads, and of course I have much more specific mics I prefer for specific tasks, but I don't hink there's a more well-rounded mic available. Even for more than $500.

Re: Phasing theory RE DI'd AND mic'd bass guitar

I read a comment by George Massenburg that said "if your console doesn't have a polarity switch, you're not using a real console." I found that amusing, but for those of you who don't, here's a trick that can keep you from plugging and unplugging standard vs. polarity-reversed mic cables all day lon...
