Re: does anyone know how to contact jon brion?

Seems he should have read this thread and already gotten in touch with you. Jon Brian was excruciatingly mediocre. I had to *run* out of Largo ..Canter's deli was great though (across the street).

Re: high pass low pass help

To obliterate unwanted frequencies, hi-pass / low-pass filters can work, but they aren't musical like a good eq.

Re: Are brand new Analog Reel to Reel a thing of the past ??

I use old recorders (Ampex, 3M from 60's and 70's) and they don't break down ever ..they're built like military tanks. Tomorrow when turning them on, I know they *will* work ..can't say that about any computer stuff, might have a good day, might have a glitchy day. Get analog!!! :D

Re: whats a good $1k compressor?

In that price range, I'd skip it all together ..(and just let the mastering guy limit it). If you *must* have a 2-bus compressor, maybe save up more $ and get an used Manley Vari-Mu.

Re: how to give a mix some depth

A great example (best I've heard) of natural depth is Sinatra's "Swingin' Affair" CD, it's like you're standing in studio A (Capitol) ..mono too.

Re: Gear That's Made A Marked Difference

This gear makes a difference for me on a continual basis (all old)
Telefunken U47
Pultec EQP-1
RCA BA6A
RCA 77
AKG D19
GE BA9
UA 175
JBL monitors
Macintosh power
UA eq
Tube console (custom)
Analog recorders, Stephens, Ampex, Magnecorders etc

As long as ICs are kept out of the chain, I'm happy.

Re: Micing very large drum kits with few mics

Doesn't matter much ..I use either a U47 or M149 for overhead, or cheap D19 or ATM 33R ..whatever is laying around. For more natural sound though, just use *one* overhead mic.

Re: Gain structure

Do you record a vocal really hot, then squeeze it down with one massive compression stage, or do you layer the responses of a few compressors that "hear" different chunks of the spectrum, and key off of different sounds from the source? No compressor here (when possible) and never multible. For gai...

Yep, mostly the same except one is more powerful ..a mic-pre can be used for line, just pad it.

Re: Lap Steel Choices

I can help ..been playin' steel for years and own a bunch. If you're somewhat new to it, I'd get a six string. Most advise eight, but you can do anything (and great) w/six ..(mostly play one or two strings at a time anyway). Fender Deluxe-Six's and Eights sound good, but the best I've heard are old ...
