Quick and short here as I just record my own stuff. Mostly the concern is to make sure the vocals are up enough in the mix.

OK, I had 20 minutes to record a bit. I had done some vocals earlier, so used the mic sitting in the middle of the room. I always want the lead vocal close to the listener, which means dryer. That, and making sure vocal is up in the mix.

You have to use the head demagnetizer perfectly, and not touch the tip to the parts. Some demagnetizers have a plastic coating on the tip, I can't speak for those. As for tape ...some older tape can get gooey, depending on brand, type, and storage conditions. Try recording the same thing on a differ...
