figured it out
I've diagnosed the static problem. Its an SPL thing. With a louder source, and particularly distorted guitar, record meters (Sonar, in my case) cannot read above -12, or else this static occurs. -12 is a healthy level anyway - it's like a built in punishment for hitting the converters too hot, I 'sp...

fizzy?
So, is the 'fizz' you hear almost a clipping, unhealthy static type noise, stronger w/ the transients? I'm going to try the earlier suggestion of keeping the box as far away from the wall wart as possible, but have doubts that it will make a difference. I think it might be that this thing just can't...

The 1st 12ay7 i bought had stripped screws on the tube guard, and a loose tube socket. I really doubt it happened at the factory that way. Definitely previously returned. Got it from MF. A bit OT, but I bought a desktop PC from comp usa a few years ago, and the box appeared to be pretty weathered. T...

Is it really 'new'?
Perhaps someone who has worked at a GC or comparable can chime in here. Whenever I buy stuff online, I'm always a bit paranoid that what I receive might actually have been previously returned by someone else. I breathe a sigh of relief when the product is in a sealed wrap of somekind, indicating fac...

metalgrass
I live in an area w/ some bluegrass studs and a thriving scene - any way, I think it's great - for about 1/2 a set. Beyond that it's pretty redundant. I appreciate chops and am a decent flatpicker myself. Reminds me of seeing a young Yngwie Malmsteen in '83 at a club here in Denver. Our jaws were on...

So you folks that own the r-121 - would you say that it is 'natural' sounding as advertised? Does it sound like what your ears hear, like it's advertised? This is important to me. It seems if this were true, people would find it a bit more versatile.
Thanks,
John

crack-a-lackin'
It'd be nice to have analoghacker himself chime in regarding this crackling issue and potential remedy.

I'm of the theory that electronic gear has a longer lifespan if it's left on for extended periods. Constant hot/cold transitions might be more harmful than consistent hot. In a 30 year old amp like the one in question, I'd worry more about other parts of the circuit failing and not the tubes, which ...

royer price hike
Geez - I was literally going to pull the trigger on an R121 purchase today, and hopped online only to notice that in the last 24 hours these mics have jumped in price to $1395.00 street.
Yesterday's $1100.00 price was a stretch, but now it's a deal breaker.
You think it's justified?

Yeah - hard to believe more folks haven't mentioned this. I agree though, I probably won't return it, because it does sound great on my voice compared to other pre's I have (rme, aphex), so for such a low price it's probably fine to keep around for just vox, acoustic & guitar. 2 in a row have had th...

damn! update
As I said above - it's dead quiet, BUT... when recording distorted guitars, at any volume, I get a clipping - crackle with the transients. Not musical, doubtfully 'tube distortion". I tried changing mics (a 57 even did it) and when switching pre's, the problem went away. How very strange. 2 others h...
