The key is avoiding too much bleed. A little bleed is good. But make sure you keep everything far enough apart that you don't get phase cancellation. Also gobos gobos gobos. Strategic use of a few can keep really insidious things (like bass guitar) from bleeding into everything. While you're at it, ...

I'll second the recommendation for Seagate drives. I've had two DOA Western Digital drives and my wife had one die after a year with no warning. We just replaced the dead Toshiba in her Mac laptop. I've seen a lot of complaints about the Toshiba and Hitachi drives in the Mac laptops from a few years...

Telecaster. No question. Something like my current one (heavily modified '85 Made in Japan with a Dimarzio Evolution in the bridge position and a PAF Pro in the neck position, wired for coil tap on both pickups and phase reverse on the rear, with a Kahler flat-mount trem) but without the trem and wi...

I got fed up with awful sounding CDs last year and started buying older stuff on vinyl. My basic criteria is that if it originally came out on vinyl and is affordable, I'm buying it on vinyl, unless I know the CD is likely to sound decent. There are a few decent reissue series out there (Ramones on ...

Pete Shelley's solo on the Buzzcocks' "Boredom." Completely inspired, that one. I also quite like: The 'Guitar' version of Zappa's "Watermelon in Easter Hay" mentioned above. Jimmy Page - "Whole Lotta Love" Brian May - "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Stone Cold Crazy" Greg Ginn - just about anything, but e...

The five I listened to the most this year that were actually released this year (as opposed to say, 'Get Evens' by The Evens which I played the crap out of all year, but which came out in November 2006 or 'Strawberries' by The Damned) were probably: Grinderman - Grinderman Floratone - Floratone Mode...

Lu Edmonds (formerly of Public Image Ltd., The Damned and some other bands) has it. That's why he quit PiL. I think he's doing all acoustic stuff now.

Really? The green album? Never could get into that one. I tried, but I really only liked a couple of the songs. I think Pinkerton is brilliant, though. I'm with you on that. I just listened to it two days ago, as a matter of fact.

I haven't seen Music for 18 Musicians, but I've seen The Desert Music performed and it was amazing. Any of his stuff being performed is absolutely worth checking out if you get the chance.

Sorry. Long story involving me losing the master and also some stuff that kept me away from the board (and the internets) for a while. I sent the track a couple of minutes ago.

You know, it's weird that they mentioned that vocal edit in "Roxanne," but not the fact that it takes almost two measures for the tape to settle up to pitch in the intro. But that's the best part of the song! In some cases it's almost definitely print through because you hear a premonition of the v...

It's not exactly the same, but I recently made a shortish road trip and I brought three CDs in case the ipod battery died: TRALALA - Is that the TRALALA The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band CRASS - Stations of the CRASS If I had to pick only 3 CDs, it would probably be: The Damned - M...

Ahhh, yes, Pyromania . I recently replaced my cassette of that one with a vinyl copy that I got for a dollar. I can't find my copy of On Through the Night . My wife and I have a running argument as to which album is better: Hysteria or Pyromania . I was into Hysteria for about 15 minutes after it ca...

I guarantee over 10 to 20 years of use, that the heads on a cassette machine have moved. Even if you're playing back something on the recording deck, if it (and the tapes) are that old and you don't regularly set your machine up, it's probably going to be off. Cassette's a pretty narrow format and i...
