I saw the video once and its a little confusing because of the string. If you use two sticks to measure out the distance for the (behind-side) mic, why can't you just use the 2-sticks to measure the over-snare mic as well? I just don't get the whole pinning-the-string-to-the-kick-drum thing... What ...

You might want to check with Richard Land at Land Audio in Nashville to see if he can turn a D12 into a D12E, so that you'll have a normal XLR connector on the bottom that will fit into an AKG mic clip.
