Did we used to have to buy (audio) monitors that were somehow "shielded" so the magnetic fields wouldn't distort the (video CRT) monitors near them?

Audio cables will not get close to the speed of light. The spec is called 'propagation delay'. My best high speed data cables work at 70% propagation delay, not too shabby. The best fiber optics work much faster. If the 70% means the fraction of the speed of light, that's still something like 700,0...
