Re: Power Amplifiers in 2019?

Thanks for the pointers, everyone. I've learned a few things: Sweetwater's category of suitable amps is hidden in the studio monitors category. I discovered Nelson Pass is selling a new little stereo Mosfet amp kit - not what I'm looking for in this instance, but tempting in general. That ART could ...

Power Amplifiers in 2019?

So what's the recommendation for a power amp for mid-size studio monitors these days? I've got a Crown D60 that I'm ready to replace - it's served valiantly for decades, but it's seen better days, and I'm done trying to nurse it along. It seems like we're deeply into the age of the class-D amp - 100...

Re: power conditioner/power bars

250 is pretty small. So it would have to be an extremely modest setup. A single infusion pump. As a reference, consider that a medium-duty PC power supply is in the 600 Watt range. And that's just keeping the stuff in the main chassis up - display and external hardware not included. My Laptop charge...

Re: XLR Patch panel - to build or buy premade?

Some vendors I go to when I'm doing cabling: store.haveinc.com redco.com mouser.com digikey.com I typically make a spreadsheet, and compare their prices. Keep an eye on price breaks - sometimes they kick in sooner at different vendors. Parts Express almost never have the best price. I'd also conside...

Re: Cheap but good headphone amp recommendations

I've got an Oz Audio HR-4 I'd sell you cheap. Oz got bought by Mackie, they gave the thing a facelift and continued selling it as the HM-54. 4 outputs, each switchable between a master input or a per-channel input. Heavy steel box, internal power supply. No complaints about it, I just upgraded to a ...

Re: Budget Boom Vocal Mic Stand Recommendation

If you want something that resembles a regular, mid-weight mic stand, the Tama and Ultimate options are both pretty good. When my entry-level stands wear out, I replace them with Tama (the regular ones, not the "iron" ones). The great big Onstage ones are big, but also a bit cumbersome. The fittings...

Re: Billing for small amounts of studio time

My day gig is in an hourly contracting & consulting area. We bill for every second I spend on a client project, and it starts from the point I start to touch resources related to their project - like hunting for old files, or finding old emails. Not that you have to run your studio like that (or may...

Re: DIY modding/fixing of gear, what voltages are dangerous?

The Fluke 115 is a really good general purpose multimeter, just a bit over your budget. But it's a reliable meter, and when you outgrow what it can do, you'll be looking at real meters (The $400 Fluke 87). Don't be confused by it's close cousins, the 114, 117, etc. They're aimed at HVAC installers a...

So if part of the problem is that it's hard to get the pin out because there's a bunch of solder making it hard to tell how to get it out, by all means remove that solder. Depending on how much solder that amounts to, bigger & stronger tools might be required. Small job = wick, medium job = big suck...

So is the solder joint in question melting reasonably well? One thing that can trip desoldering up is pads on ground pours, or other metal features that just absorb the heat, and keep the solder from flowing. In that case, preheating with a heatgun can help - if the surrounding areas aren't cool, th...

You might take a peek at Pearl's new line of "utility" snares.

Decent "bread & butter" drums, rather than exotic materials and signature editions. Thin maple shells, in two finishes, and a wide array of sizes. Under $200 USD, mostly.

Yeah, didn't they make a thin blue singly ply (maybe called the "500"?), meant to be a color-coordinated bottom head for a hydraulic?

"Ring for days" is not at all my experience with hydraulics.

Probably not.

Hydraulics don't sustain like that.
