Re: Side chain filtering for SSL bus comp

The key input gets rectified & turned into a DC representation of the signal amplitude, which becomes the CV to the VCAs for the compressor. From an audio perspective, it gets mangled pretty severely, so audio quality of the filter probably doesn't matter much. As long as it's not so noisy as to cau...

Re: Side chain filtering for SSL bus comp

I had to track down a photo of the original to make sure I understood the question. https://cdn1.soniccircus.com/uploads/IMG_9969-scaled.jpg To use the key as a filtered sidechain: Sum the L and R signals to get mono (try an aux out from console). Patch them to filter/EQ of choice Patch that to the ...

re-selling at large mark-up Only in a lot of cases, he's missing the mark on the resale. If you go click that link I posted, you'll see that flowerpot guy has apparently had that same RV3 listed for 9+ years now. ~~~~~~~~~ Evan, welcome, and please don't let us derail you - a friend has an RV1 and ...

Re: Looking for Furman RV-2 spring reverb for sale

So I went and checked reverb: I don't see a single Furman RV3 there...can you post a link?

In fact, googling for Furman RV3 leads me to an old post of my own, and not much else.

Re: DAW Recording on Mac - Startup drive as storage drive in 2021

I think a lot of that stuff is historical footnote at this point. In the early DAW days, we were approaching the speed limits of what a hard drive could do, just for audio handling. And we were living with modest amounts of RAM, and the operating system would augment it with "virtual memory", using ...

"Studio Grade" stud finder.

Shut yer trap, VVV  I'm fighting my way through trim carpentry on the new rooms. The hassle is that it's very hard to find studs when there are 2 and 3 layers of 5/8" drywall. I've been using a basic B&D model, and a somewhat fancier Zircon with a metal stud mode, and a deep-scan option. The B...

Re: hughes srs ak100/stereo enhancers

The Orban's not that much more...7 opamps? A static phase shifter, and an M-S decoder. Phase shifted signal becomes the S channel, dry signal is M. (kinda reminds me of the mono-stereo trick with a stereo graphic EQ - run mono input to both channels, boost even-numbered bands on one side, odd number...

Re: Help me design my rooms

Well, it's pretty easy to use. But not magic. If you're laminating the room with the stuff, and overlap all of the seams to seal things up, it can help some. It's easier to apply during construction - between drywall layers, laminated to doors. It needs something structurally solid to mount it on - ...

Re: Fabric for bass traps/absorbers

This stuff is pretty inexpensive:

That looks pretty sheer. It might not enclose the fiberglass/rockwool as thoroughly as you might hope.

Re: Fabric for bass traps/absorbers

My 'issue' with GoM and all of the burlap looking things is that, no matter the color, its just visually unattractive. I'd really like to at least do the wall with the window in my booth in crushed velvet. That coms from Rose Brand...suppliers of theatre curtains, trade show drapes, and the like. T...

Re: instrument DI box bang-for-buck

If your interface has an "instrument" input, it's got the DI built in. A DI does 2 or 3 or 4 useful things. Converts unbalanced to balanced. Steps up the input impedance, so it doesn't load a guitar pickup. (possibly) offers a ground lift, to break ground loops. (possibly) attenuates the signal, so ...

Re: Help me design my rooms

If you aren't planning on being there for very long, remodeling will be a sunk cost.

Real estate is the most predictable "investment" in this game. Own it if you can - if you've got a mortgage for it, at least you get a 1098 at the end of the year.
