Re: new strings wow duh
My hands can kill a new set of string really quickly. It got to be so expensive to try to keep fresh sounding strings on my bass that I wound up just putting flats on it. Hey! already dead!

Re: faking a rhodes...
I guess it depends on the kind of rhodes sound you are looking for. The super syrupy 70's soft rock disco sound (Babe i'm leaving, I must be on my way...)is pretty easy to get from even the least expensive synths out there, hell the DX7 FM Piano sound is probably what most of that was, before it was...

vibration control
Keep in mind that while I'm no $10,000 AC cable audiophile, I can tell the difference between the 22ga stuff that they have at walmart and a decent pair of speaker cables (think more like $100). But some of it makes sense (even if not to the extremes taken by the audiophiles). For instance, vibratio...

Re: More stupid tube amp questions about ohms n' volume n su
There's another piece of the puzzle that we've been touching on here, and that is called Sensitivity. No, not the Dan Fogelberg kind of sensitivity, the quantification of how many dB's a particular speaker will generate with a given input. It can also be referred to as efficiency. You see this speci...

Re: How do you make a capacitor-discharging tool?
Screwdriver is SCARY!! I use whatever resistor I happen to have lying around at the time, which when I'm working on one of my amps will probably be something like a 1/2w 100k. I just leave it on both legs of the cap for a while, and then I'll finish off by shorting it with a screwdriver. I feel that...

Re: The collest thing you learned from tape op?
to paraphrase someone, it's a far far better thing to have recorded and screwed up than to have not recorded at all...that's what I've learned (among about a million other things)

Re: Some slightly stupid (tube) amp questions
The small preamp tubes (like 12AX7's) are actually two tubes in the same tube; they're known as dual triads or dual pentodes, depending on the actual tube. It is possible that one of the halves of the tube is more microphonic than the other, and one of thepositions that the tube is plugged into is m...

oh man...some days it doesn't pay to get up out of bed. Noel was a big influence on me as a bass player..and a big influence on hippie afro I had in 11th grade that got me beat up a lot.

Re: I need studio space in Los Angeles
The space I saw in the valley is no longer available. You might want to try calling Swinghouse Rehearsal studios. They recently moved out of their old location on Highland, and that building is looking pretty emtpy these days, and they might know if it's available.

Re: yeahs and nahs pleeza! Berhinger T1953
Looks waaaaay cooler than it sounds. If you turn the "vintagizer" knob all the way down it's about as good as a crappy behringer board preamp. If you use the vintagizer knob and put the tube in the signal it's a crappy behringer board preamp with a crappy tube in the signal. I have one and I use it ...

Re: your song on the radio
This just made me realize that I haven't had a tuner in my home stereo since 1997 when my old tube Fisher receiver died...I haven't missed it, and honestly didn't even really notice until now... I guess I've turned into one of those 'radio on in the car and that's it' people. In the car it's NPR or ...

Re: Mapex Drums experience?
I'm certainly no drummer, though I had the distinct pleasure of borrowing a set of Austalian made Brady drums from the then-importer in Tallahassee, FL to record an album with. Exceptionally well made and strikingly beautiful, the drums mad the recording process sooo easy because they sounded incred...

Re: I need studio space in Los Angeles
Theres a place just on the cusp of downtown that used to be called Gospel Recordings. The Gospel Recordings sign came down a while ago, but I don't see a for lease sign up. Might be worth looking into. I remember a couple of months ago driving up Van Nuys blvd, near the 101, and seeing "recording st...
